Sponsor Our ArticlesOxford, Mississippi will host a Valentine’s Day crafting event at the IDEAlab on February 12, featuring vintage card displays and calligraphy demonstrations. Open to all students, this event promotes creativity and community connection, with additional crafting resources and activities available year-round. The IDEAlab serves as a creative hub for students, providing access to tools and technologies for artistic expression beyond Valentine’s Day.
Oxford, Mississippi, is set to sprinkle some crafty love this Valentine’s Day with a special event hosted by the IDEAlab. Located on the first floor of the J.D. Williams Library, the IDEAlab invites all students to join in on the festivities scheduled for Wednesday, February 12, at both 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
The highlight of this year’s Valentine’s Day event will be a showcase of vintage cards pulled straight from the library’s existing archives, offering a glimpse into the romantic proclamations of the past. In addition to the delightful card display, attendees can enjoy a calligraphy demonstration. This is not just a chance to admire the art of beautiful writing but also an opportunity to learn a little bit about this timeless skill.
The event is entirely organized by student workers and ambassadors from the IDEAlab. It’s all part of a fantastic effort to create stress-free and enjoyable crafting activities for students, proving that there’s always a reason to celebrate creativity on campus, especially during a season dedicated to love and friendship.
The IDEAlab isn’t just about Valentine’s Day crafts, though; it serves as a hub for creative and academic resources available to the University of Mississippi community. Opening its doors from Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the lab offers a variety of amenities perfect for budding artists, passionate creators, and even tech-savvy students looking to explore new media.
One of the standout features is STUDIOone, which is an equipped video and podcast recording studio alongside an editing suite. With video cameras, microphones, a green screen, and a Rodecaster system, students can bring their creative visions to life. If virtual reality or electronics intrigue you, the IDEAlab also has Oculus VR systems and Snap Circuits for those adventurous enough to step into the digital world.
Those interested in hands-on crafting will be delighted to find an array of resources at their disposal. Whether it’s sewing machines, a button maker, or bookbinding tools, the IDEAlab has what you need to get your creative juices flowing. From lamination to vinyl cutting and general art supplies, anyone looking to create something special can find plenty of inspiration and assistance.
Sarah Katherine Glass, the program coordinator for the IDEAlab, emphasizes the importance of community fostering through these creative events. The goal is for students to enhance their existing skills, learn new ones, and build a crafting network that could last well beyond their college years. One of the students, Sahara Wiles-Koehler, found the IDEAlab during finals week, and it has since become her go-to spot for stress relief through various craft activities.
Beyond the Valentine’s festivities, the IDEAlab is planning even more engaging events throughout the semester. Mark your calendars for a board game event on February 26 and a DIY hat-making event featuring patches and fabric markers on March 5. Interested participants can register for these events and other activities on the UM Libraries’ official website.
As Valentine’s Day approaches, come and express your creativity at the IDEAlab! Whether it’s making vintage cards or experiencing new crafting techniques, there’s no better way to spread love and joy than through creative expression. Grab your friends, and don’t miss out on this chance to make unforgettable memories!
