UM to Host Third Annual Mississippi Day

Oxford, Mississippi – Home to Annual Celebration

The University of Mississippi, affectionately known as UM, will host its third annual Mississippi Day on Saturday, April 13. The event, which runs from 10 a.m to 2 p.m, will take place in the Circle, Union Plaza and Galtney-Lott Plaza. Celebrating the best of the University and state, the extravaganza promises to be a day full of activities.

Educational Extravaganza for Everyone

Open to students and the public, Mississippi Day will notably exhibit UM’s spectacular achievements, thrilling involvements, and captivating programs on campus. Each academic department of the University will play host to its own tent, inviting guests to gain insights into the plethora of happenings within the University.

Alongside this, attendees can look forward to enjoying a broad array of food trucks and family-friendly activities such as a rock climbing wall, stuff-a-pup booth, a bounce house, photo booth, snow cones, and more.

Hands-On Learning: Experience the Academic Thrill

Mississippi Day 2024 will be similar to previous events in that visitors can expect to engage in hands-on learning activities offered by UM’s academic departments,” comments Emily Ferris, Mississippi Day coordinator and associate director of the Division of Outreach and Continuing Education. “These activities will allow visitors of all ages to participate in learning and academic discovery.”

UM prides itself on its academic diversity, and all 10 colleges will participate, along with featuring participation from more than 70 individual departments. The Department of Art and Art History, for instance, will offer attendees a chance to unleash their creativity and make a take-home creation of their own.

A Virtual Reality Experience with Ole Miss Esports

Given the rising trend of esports, Ole Miss Esports will also set up a demo of their games, offering a chance for the community to try out some esports action. This will feature a play of Super Smash Ultimate on two Nintendos Switches and a sneak peek into the world of virtual reality with headsets from the facility.

Breaking Out of the Academic Bubble

Current students of the University are encouraged to be part of this eventful day. Often, students stick to their niche areas – Greek life, SEC culture, academics – and rarely venture beyond these realms to explore what the University and state have to offer. Mississippi Day provides the perfect platform for them to broaden their horizon and pull away from their ‘tunnel vision.’

Anticipating a Successful Turnout

After successful events in the prior two years, the coordinator Emily Ferris is hopeful for an even larger turnout this year and describes it as a celebration of all exciting things happening at the flagship University of Mississippi. The event is an ideal opportunity for the people in the state to come together and celebrate the accomplishments and the wide variety of offerings from the University, thereby fostering a stronger bond among the University community and the public.
