The charming city of Oxford, Mississippi was buzzing recently as the University of Mississippi hosted its fifth annual Giving Day on April 9-10, 2025. This vibrant event is designed to rally the university community, including students, alumni, and faculty, to come together for a truly fantastic cause. And boy, did they deliver! This year, the campaign raised an incredible $11.5 million through just over 3,000 donations!
Each year, Giving Day stands as a reminder of the power of collective contributions to shape the future of the university. It specifically aims to enhance various academic schools, the College of Liberal Arts, and other university organizations. The funds generated go towards vital university programs, scholarships, and facilities that support the student body and elevate the educational experience.
The standout contributions this year came from some incredibly generous individuals. One of the highlights was a magnificent $5 million donation from Barbara Beckmann to the Department of Chemical Engineering. This significant investment will lead to the department being named in her honor, marking her lasting legacy at the university.
Equally inspiring was the $4 million commitment from Jean and Jerry Jordan, who established the Jordan Center for Journalism Advocacy and Innovation at the School of Journalism and New Media. Their support reflects a deep belief in the importance of journalism and community advocacy, aiming to enhance the school’s profile and broaden its impact.
Jan and George Pilko also made headlines with their $1.5 million gift to create the Excellence in STEM Scholarship Endowment. This generous fund will ensure that talented young Mississippians have access to scholarships, effectively eliminating financial barriers that could hinder their education.
