University of Mississippi Opera Theatre to Present Haunting English Classic “The Turn of the Screw” This Spring

Ghostly Intrigue & Suspense: University of Mississippi Opera Sheds Light on Supernatural

Introduction

The University of Mississippi Opera Theatre leaves no stone unturned in bringing a captivating element of suspense and the supernatural to its annual spring production. Local audiences will be transported to the ethereal world of one of the greatest English ghost stories, “The Turn of the Screw”, staged at the prestigious Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts

Opera, A Ghostly Tale

Written by famed English composer Benjamin Britten, “The Turn of the Screw” takes inspiration from the classic 1898 Henry James novella bearing the same title. The opera has scheduled performances at 7:30 pm on April 26 and at 3 pm on April 28, 2024, creating a riveting atmosphere of psychological suspense.

Plot – A Mixture of Reality and Imagination

As explained by Bonita Bunt, director of the opera theatre, “the story trails an unnamed governess sent to a secluded house in the countryside. Having been appointed to care for two children, she finds herself haunted by the distressing presence of the former governess. The opera pursues a notable mystery – it is for the audience to discern whether the occurrences are palpable or merely figments of her imagination.”

Modern Score Enhances Drama

The opera is backed by an avant-garde musical score characterized by a budding rhythm throughout its course. This rhythm embarks on a journey to illustrate the inner thoughts and travails of characters thrown into extraordinary situations. Bunt apprised, “the students have taken great pleasure in this unique aspect of the opera. A particular musical theme reverberates across the opera in different renditions, unveiling itself in various guises after each scene. Performed by the LOU Symphony Orchestra, the melody captivates listeners with its sophistication and complexity.”

Character Portrayals Fabricate the Supernatural

The opera brings to life Antoin Marshall, a vocal performance scholar pursuing his master’s. Depicted as an evil ghost haunting one of the children, he discloses, “my character forbids the child from revealing any secrets about our unnatural bonding. As the story progresses, I urge him to pilfer the letter that could perhaps sever our connection.”

The role of the governess is performed by Macey Trussell, a talented guest artist and long-time collaborator with opera houses. Commenting on Trussel’s inclusion, Bunt affirmed, “we are thrilled to provide students with an opportunity to work alongside an industry professional, enriching their experience.”

Invitation To Attend The Performance

Marshall encourages community members to support the arts and losing themselves in the world that the opera creates. Tickets to attend the performances are priced at $5 for UM students and employees and $10 for the general public. Tickets to this must-see event are available at the Ole Miss Box Office.
