Oxford Welcomes Students with Insights on Happiness

Oxford, Mississippi – On August 27, 2024, students, faculty, and staff gathered at the Sandy and John Black Pavilion for the annual Fall Convocation at the University of Mississippi. This important event marked the beginning of the new academic year, with a focus on happiness and personal growth. The keynote speaker, Arthur Brooks, is a prominent author of the book titled “Build the Life You Want: The Art and Science of Getting Happier.” His work has been selected for the university’s common reading experience, which has been a tradition since 2011, welcoming first-year students with a shared book each fall.

Finding Happiness in College

During his speech, Brooks encouraged everyone to reevaluate their understanding of happiness. He shared that happiness is not just a fleeting feeling but something we can actively work on. “You want to add people and memories to the things you like. That’s the point here in college, to do things together with your new friends and the people that you love,” he said. He emphasized the importance of forming connections and seeking joyful experiences.

Brooks also posed some thought-provoking questions to the audience: “Why are you alive?” and “For what would you give your life?” He urged students to explore these questions during their time on campus. “This is your opportunity to discover what truly matters to you,” he said.

Sharing Ideas for Greater Impact

As he wrapped up his talk, Brooks encouraged students to share the principles discussed in his book with others. “The more you share the ideas, the more these ideas will be permanently launched in your brain and written on your heart,” he advised. He stressed the idea that helping others find happiness can also lead to personal fulfillment. “It’s a good thing to help other people be happier, and you’ll be doing good for yourself, because you’ll never forget,” he added.

A Tradition of Recognition

In addition to Brooks’ speech, the convocation included a recognition ceremony. Lou Burney, this year’s St. Amand Outstanding Award Recipient, delivered a short address highlighting the achievements of students. Commemorative coins were also awarded to students as part of the celebration, marking their entry into college life.

The event concluded with a heartfelt reading of the University Creed by Associated Student Body President, Hannah Watts, followed by a performance of the Alma Mater led by members of the University of Mississippi Chorus. This allowed for a unifying moment among attendees, emphasizing the spirit and pride associated with being part of the Ole Miss community.

Freshmen Share Their Thoughts

Many students left the convocation feeling inspired. Izzy Goddard, a freshman biology major, described the event as “really motivating” and a great start to the year. She mentioned feeling energized by Brooks’ advice on seeking happiness and connection during college.

Another freshman, Katie Norris, echoed her sentiment, stating, “It was really great hearing from the author and about his book. It gave me a new perspective on going to college and how to think about things.” These reflections show that the message on happiness resonated with the incoming class, setting a positive tone for their college journey.
