Oxford University’s Ghostlight Repertory Theatre Showcases Original Works by Student Playwrights in 2024-2025 Season

Oxford Embraces Student Playwrights with Ghostlight Repertory Theatre

OXFORD, Miss. – The University of Mississippi’s Ghostlight Repertory Theatre is gearing up for an exciting season showcasing original works by emerging student playwrights. With the aim to foster creativity and provide a supportive space for students, Ghostlight has plans in place for its 2024-2025 performance season.

Highlighting New Talent

According to Kayla Jacobs, the Artistic Director and a senior design and production major from Ocean Springs, the theater serves as a unique platform for students to explore their artistic abilities. “Ghostlight serves as a place for students to experiment with new opportunities in a low-stakes environment separate from the mainstage productions of the department,” Jacobs mentioned.

This semester, the spotlight will be on “Dear Mya”, an original play by student playwright Jacob Matthews. Next semester, audiences can look forward to “Long Live the King,” directed by Cooper Thorpe and Hannah Rose Richards, and “Silent but Not Silenced,” created by Alexa Christian.

Student Voices Matter

Matthews expressed his gratitude for the chance to bring “Dear Mya” to life, stating, “I think this play explores very important topics, topics that audiences should strive to learn about, understand, and spread awareness about.” He emphasized that the writings from individuals of his generation provide vital insight into their views and experiences.

Jacobs also encouraged participation in Ghostlight, saying, “It’s open to anyone interested. No experience is required.” She affirmed the organization’s commitment to helping students learn new skills and processes, assuring potential members that everyone can find a way to get involved.

A Community of Theatrical Enthusiasts

Junior theatre arts major Alyssa Sheppard, originally from Hernando, spoke highly of her experience with Ghostlight. “I first heard about Ghostlight at our new student orientation for our department, and it seemed like a super cool opportunity,” Sheppard recalled. She had seen their production of “The Lightning Thief”, which she described as one of the best shows she had attended.

Sheppard highlighted the learning opportunities Ghostlight provides, stating, “If I was not already a part of Ghostlight, I would absolutely consider joining them again.” She appreciates the organization’s mission to create a safe space for students to hone their craft, whether it’s in design, playwriting, acting, directing, or other roles.

Opportunities Beyond the Spotlight

For those not interested in performing, Ghostlight presents various behind-the-scenes roles in costume, set, and prop design. There are also technical positions available for those interested in sound control and lighting. Sheppard pointed out that even students who prefer to sit in the audience play an important role in a production’s success.

“For people who are not interested in being on stage, there is a place for everyone in the production process,” she said. “I know that all of the people that worked on these shows are so thankful for each and every person that came to see their hard work.” She expressed her love for supporting fellow students’ creative efforts.

Involvement Encouraged

Ghostlight is not just about performances; it aims to build a community that appreciates and values theater. Whether a student wants to shine on stage or work behind the scenes, there is a place for everyone in this vibrant theater ecosystem.

As the University of Mississippi prepares for another exciting year of student-led productions, the Ghostlight Repertory Theatre welcomes everyone to join in and experience the rich tapestry of creativity and talent on display.
