Snackbar Announces Unique Dinner Series with Cook Eve Flaschka
Oxford’s popular gastronomic hub, Snackbar, is set to continue its mouthwatering “Food of My People” dinner series, engaging its talented cook, Eve Flaschka.
Flaschka, who hails from a diverse Polish-Jewish and Austrian background, grew up cherishing the different food cultures that graced her dining table. This upcoming dinner series aims to bring these culinary traditions to Snackbar’s clientele, offering an authentic trip down the lane of her heritage flavours.
Cherishing Heritage Through Food
For Flaschka, the food choices for the series carry sentimental value, “The foods I chose were always my favorites to eat growing up, or hold some special sentiments behind them. I ate a lot of different dishes, but I had clear preferences,” said Flaschka, capturing the essence of the upcoming extravaganza.
The set menu for the event includes a four-course meal comprising traditional Jewish cuisine, such as Challah, Matzah ball soup, braised brisket, and Babka. The affair is scheduled for Thursday, starting at 6:00 p.m. at Snackbar.
A Platform to Shine
“Food of My People” is an initiative by Snackbar Chef Vishwesh Bhatt to spotlight the intersection of various cuisines by tapping local talents from diverse cultural backgrounds. “Each one has been unique and great,” said Bhatt, commenting about the series. “We are continually looking for new folks to share their talents and stories so please recommend anyone that may be interested in being part of the series.”
Inspirations Stirring in a Pot
Taking a seat back from her cooking duties for the day, Flaschka will instead engage the attendees through stories about the dishes being served, such as the special Matzah ball soup. “Matzah ball soup was always something I asked my mom for help with growing up. I have a clear memory of hosting Passover at my house with all my closest friends, and my mom helping me build the matzoh balls which I served at dinner,” fondly remembered Flaschka.
Flaschka’s tryst with cooking began during her childhood, surrounded by family members who passionately loved cooking. “My parents and grandparents are all passionate about cooking, and they’d invite me to help with the cooking process whenever I was little. Though entrusting a 12-year-old with a hot pan of fatty foods, spitting hot oil everywhere, isn’t the safest idea, my family’s perseverance to let me learn allowed me to foster a love of cooking,” revealed Flaschka.
