On August 27, 2024, at the University of Mississippi, State Auditor Shad White addressed the Ole Miss College Republicans during their first meeting of the academic year. White, a former Ole Miss student himself, emphasized the critical role that young people can play in shaping the future of Mississippi’s politics.
“Young people can make a huge difference in Mississippi, and I saw that when I was a College Republican here getting involved in campaigns,” White remarked, highlighting the potential impact students can have when they take initiative in political matters. His message resonated with the audience, as he encouraged attendees to explore important issues within the government that they can engage with.
The meeting started with remarks from Cass Rutledge, President of the Ole Miss College Republicans. He addressed students from various political backgrounds, stating, “If you’re an independent (or) if you’re a Democrat, you have a place here. Even if you disagree with us, if you stick around long enough you might make a friend.” This approach aimed to foster inclusiveness among students who may not fully align with the organization’s values.
Among the attendees was Hugh Lewis, a sophomore biology major who does not identify as a registered member of the group. Lewis shared, “I came to hear (Shad White) speak. My buddy invited me, so I’m here. It’s important for other students and other college Republicans to attend to spread awareness and to form a community.” This illustrates how the event aimed not only to promote party ideals but also to build a network among students.
During his talk, White shared insights about his own journey to becoming the state auditor and his experiences both as an Ole Miss student and as a Rhodes Scholar. He made a point to offer practical career advice, recounting stories from his early career in Mississippi politics. “My advice to you is to pick up the broom and sweep through it,” White said. He emphasized the significance of taking on tasks, no matter how small, to demonstrate capability and reliability. “If you do that, and you do it well, your boss is going to give you the next slightly more important task.”
White engaged with students during a question-and-answer session that focused on the future of Mississippi and the Republican Party. Responses were enthusiastic, as participants reflected on the importance of connecting with experienced leaders. Graham Speed, secretary of the College Republicans and a senior accounting major, noted, “When we get people here who are experienced (and) who are in the very places that we’ll be in in 10 to 20 years, it’s an invaluable opportunity to learn (and) to shape our opinions and minds into what we would want them to become in the future.”
The event served as a crucial starting point for the Ole Miss College Republicans as they embark on a new school year, emphasizing the significance of youth engagement in politics and fostering a diverse community of ideas. With leaders like Shad White steering these discussions, the hope is that students will be inspired to actively engage in the political sphere and prepare for their future roles.
