Sponsor Our ArticlesOxford residents can expect a fresh cup of coffee soon, as a second location of Shadrachs Coffee has been approved by the Oxford Planning Commission. The new shop is set to open at 2405 South Lamar Blvd., conveniently located just south of the recently built Oxford Self Storage facility and across from the intersection of Harlan Drive.
The planning for the new coffee shop is currently under review by the city planning staff. One key feature of the new shop will be its drive-thru service, which recently received a special exception from the planning commission. Drive-thrus are typically restricted in areas classified as Traditional Neighborhood Business but can be allowed with special circumstances.
According to the plans, Shadrachs Coffee will modify the existing layout of the site. There are currently two curb cuts available, and the new plans will turn the southern curb cut into an exit only. This change will ensure that all incoming traffic uses the northern entry, creating a more organized flow. The layout is designed to accommodate up to 11 stacking spaces in a double lane on the east side of the building, in addition to about six single lane spaces on the west and south sides.
City planning staff has indicated that the number of stacking spaces appears adequate for the anticipated customer flow, similar to what is available at the existing West Jackson location. The responsibility for managing the queue and ensuring that it does not spill over into public areas rests with Shadrachs Coffee. This is an important task, as any significant traffic issues could lead to further evaluations by city staff.
In response to these concerns, City Attorney Pope Mallette reassured the commission that if the staff finds the drive-thru queue creates safety risks by extending into public areas, the applicant would need to return for reconsideration of the special exception.
The approval process for Shadrachs Coffee is an important step forward for the local community. A new coffee destination is likely to attract coffee lovers in the area and provide additional jobs for residents. As the planning process unfolds, further evaluations will ensure that any potential traffic challenges are appropriately addressed.
Overall, the Oxford community is eagerly anticipating the arrival of a second Shadrachs Coffee location, where many can gather for their daily coffee needs. Stay tuned for more updates as city planning staff continue to review the site plan and finalize details.
