Scammers Arrested in Lafayette County After Targeting Local Resident
Oxford, Mississippi – In a recent operation, the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office collaborated with the U.S. Attorney’s Office to apprehend two men from Georgia who were allegedly trying to scam a local citizen. This incident highlights the rising issue of fraud and scams in the area, prompting law enforcement to take swift action.
Details of the Scam
According to reports, a local resident fell victim to a fraudulent scheme after receiving a phone call that seemed legitimate at first. On Thursday, the victim reported that someone claiming to be from Amazon called, asking if they had purchased an expensive computer worth $4,000. When the victim denied making such a purchase, the caller claimed that their assets were frozen and that the Social Security Administration would be in touch about the issue.
Shortly after, the victim received another call, this time from someone the victim believed was from the Social Security Administration. The scammer provided a photo along with an ID badge and instructed the victim to withdraw all their money from the bank, leaving only $1,500 in their account. Trusting the authority figure on the other line, the victim complied.
Following Instructions
As per the scammer’s instructions, the victim was told that someone would pick up the remaining cash from their home for safekeeping. The scammers further explained that the funds would be held by the U.S. Department of Treasury and would be returned once the victim received a new Social Security number. Feeling uncertain about the situation, the victim decided to report the series of events, which ultimately led to law enforcement intervention.
Police Intervention and Arrests
Recognizing the potential danger and severity of the situation, the Sheriff’s Office set up an operation to catch the scammers in the act. When the men arrived at the victim’s home the next day to collect the cash, they were apprehended by investigators. The suspects were later identified as Nasruddin Bhai Nooruddin, 52, and Chaturali Alauidin Roy, 69, both residents of Atlanta, Georgia.
The authorities reported that the arrests were made without incident. Both Nooruddin and Roy are currently held in custody, awaiting a bail hearing, as the investigation continues to ensure all details surrounding the scam are thoroughly examined.
