PARIS – Former Ole Miss track and field star Sam Kendricks is back from the exciting 2024 Paris Olympics with a silver medal in hand. Kendricks took part in the men’s pole vault competition on Monday, where he showcased his remarkable skills by successfully clearing a height of 5.95 meters.
In a thrilling contest, Armand Duplantis from Sweden claimed the gold medal, while Emmanouil Karalis of Greece secured the bronze. Kendricks’ achievement marks a significant highlight in his athletic career, especially since this was his third appearance at the Olympics.
Kendricks initially faced challenges during the event. Although he managed to clear the 5.95-meter height on his first attempt, he struggled with the elusive six-meter mark, which has been a personal goal for him. Kendricks’ personal best stands at 6.06 meters, a mark he set prior to these games.
In previous Olympic appearances, Kendricks had a mixed experience. He won a bronze medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics, but his journey to Tokyo in 2021 took an unexpected turn when he tested positive for COVID-19, which prevented him from competing in those Games. He was unvaccinated at that time, leading to a significant setback in his career. However, despite initial hesitations about participating in the Paris Games, Kendricks decided to compete after winning the pole vault event at the Olympic Trials in June.
This decision turned out to be vital, as he became the first medalist for Ole Miss in the ongoing Olympics, bringing pride back to his university and hometown of Oxford.
Kendricks, who graduated from Ole Miss in 2014, had a remarkable college career, being a two-time NCAA champion and winning two SEC titles. His accomplishments reflect his dedication to the sport and the hard work he put in during his time at the university. His success at the Olympics only adds to his already impressive legacy at Ole Miss.
Kendricks isn’t the only former Rebel hoping to shine at the Olympics. McKenzie Long, another talented athlete from Ole Miss, is set to race in the women’s 200-meter semifinals on Monday. If she performs well, she will compete in the finals scheduled for Tuesday. Long, who also capped off her college career with three NCAA titles this past spring, will be looking to join Kendricks on the Olympic medal stand.
As the Olympics continue in Paris, all eyes will be on athletes from various backgrounds, showcasing their talents and representing their countries. For Sam Kendricks, his journey not only brings home a medal but also serves as inspiration for aspiring athletes everywhere. His story is a reminder of resilience and success in the face of challenges, and it exemplifies the spirit of competition at the highest level.
