Exciting News for Oxford: New Parkinson’s Support Group Launching Soon!

Great things are happening in Oxford! A brand-new support group dedicated to those living with Parkinson’s disease is all set to kick off this coming April. The Oxford Parkinson’s Support Group promises to be a warm and welcoming place for both patients and their caregivers to connect, learn, and even get moving!

Mark Your Calendars!

The inaugural meeting of the Oxford Parkinson’s Support Group will take place on April 10, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. This first gathering is just a stepping stone, as the group plans to meet regularly on the second Thursday of each month. You can find these friendly get-togethers at the Oxford University United Methodist Church, specifically in Room 240.

A Place for Connection and Education

The aims of this valuable group extend far beyond just socialization. The Oxford Parkinson’s Support Group will provide essential resources, including education and a dedicated time for exercise. Participants can expect a variety of activities that include social time, informative presentations by experts in the field, and even access to the church’s walking track to help promote physical wellness. Who doesn’t love a bit of exercise while getting to know others in the community?

Understanding the Need

Kathy and Ashton Pearson, recognized a pressing need for a dedicated support network in the greater Oxford area. Right now, the only comparable options are over in Jackson or Memphis, which makes it tough for local families dealing with Parkinson’s. With Ashton having been diagnosed with this condition for over 12 years, the experience gives the Pearsons a profound understanding of the support that is needed.

Meet the Leadership Team

Joining the Pearsons in this fulfilling venture is a talented leadership team that includes Michelle Cohen, an occupational therapist and group exercise instructor. With her expertise, attendees will have access to fantastic exercise resources designed for everyday physical activity. Another valuable member is Elizabeth Burklow, a speech therapist and instructor at the University of Mississippi. Her special focus on treating individuals with Parkinson’s makes her an invaluable asset to the group.

What to Expect!

Each monthly meeting will feature a guest speaker covering a broad range of topics pertinent to Parkinson’s patients and their caregivers. From insights on speech therapy to engaging mobility exercises, attendees will leave each session armed with actionable advice that can make a real difference in their lives. The emphasis on local resources will ensure that community members have everything they need at their fingertips.

Free Parking to Make Life Easier

No need to worry about parking! Those attending the meetings can take advantage of free parking at designated spaces, including lots on University Avenue, the Tyler Avenue parking deck, and the South 9th Street parking garage. It’s just one less thing to think about when you’re heading to a meeting that could potentially enhance your quality of life!
