Oxford Bounces Back After Stormy Weather

OXFORD, Miss. — It’s been quite the day in Oxford as we faced a serious weather event with heavy rain and strong winds that rolled through the area. As the storm named Francine made its way up Interstate 55, residents hunkered down and waited to see what kind of impact it would have on our beloved city.

Not Too Bad, All Things Considered

In good news, officials reported that Oxford appears to have dodged a major disaster. The most significant issue came from heavy winds that caused a tree to fall, blocking a roadway and bringing down some utility lines just south of the square. Fortunately, no major damage has been reported so far. Shanre Fortner, the director of Oxford’s Emergency Management Agency, shared that they have been keeping an eye on things and remained hopeful. “I think so far we’ve had one tree fall and it blocked a roadway. A lot of rain, but no flooding issues as of yet,” he said, highlighting the situation could have been much worse.

Prepared for Anything

Fortner also mentioned that they are well-prepared, equipped with chainsaws, heavy machinery, and extra personnel on standby throughout the night if needed. Despite the rain and potential dangers, his mood was optimistic as he observed the circumstances. “I believe the main threats have passed. Of course, you know with any weather event… high winds and this much rain, anything could occur,” he added cautiously.

Weather Warnings Still in Place

Even after the storm seems to have peaked, the weather isn’t done yet. Residents should still be cautious as there’s a flood watch and a wind advisory in effect for our area. Lafayette County Emergency Management noted there were only a “few hundred outages” recorded due to the high winds, which reached up to 39 mph around 1 PM. Thankfully, they confirmed that no injuries came from the storm, allowing us to breathe a bit easier.

What’s Next for Oxford

As the storm winds down, locals are left wondering what’s next. With all this rain, many are closely monitoring conditions to make sure there are no flash floods or other unexpected weather developments. The city is on alert, ready to respond if anything changes.
