Oxford’s Upcoming Seafood Restaurant, The Velvet Ditch, Overcomes Setbacks and Nears Completion

Oxford’s New Seafood Restaurant Hits a Hurdle but Makes Progress

Oxford, with its vibrant atmosphere and rich culinary scene, recently witnessed a bit of back-and-forth regarding the much-anticipated opening of The Velvet Ditch, a seafood restaurant poised to bring some fresh tastes off the Square. Even though owner Jared Foster faced a setback last week, he managed to secure a small victory that keeps hope alive for his establishment.

Plans for Outdoor Space Squashed

Last Thursday, the Oxford Board of Aldermen put the brakes on Foster’s idea to create an outdoor dining and bar area at The Velvet Ditch. This outdoor setup was designed to attract a larger crowd, allowing patrons to enjoy their meals under the open sky. However, concerns about safety were raised due to the potential for over 200 guests to exit the building at once, particularly after dinner hours when the restaurant shifts more toward a bar vibe.

The restaurant is set in the former Abner’s building on the bustling corner of South Lamar Boulevard and University Avenue, a location that many feel has great potential. Foster’s original plan involved removing the parking lot to lay down turf and add tables and a bar for a cozy outdoor experience. Excitement was high when the Oxford Planning Commission approved his plans in a tight 4 to 3 vote earlier this month. Unfortunately, some nearby residents voiced their concerns about the noise and traffic that could arise, prompting the Aldermen to reverse that approval.

Small Win for Signage

Despite the setback with the outdoor area, all hope wasn’t lost for Foster this week. The Oxford Courthouse Square Historic Preservation Commission gave the thumbs up for a new sign on the building, granting a Certificate of Appropriateness on Monday. The sign will not only give The Velvet Ditch its unique identity but also enhance the overall aesthetic of the historic area. While it may seem like a small win, it’s an important step in establishing the restaurant’s presence on the Square.

Next Steps for The Velvet Ditch

Construction is still ongoing within the restaurant, allowing Foster to focus on completing the indoor section while he navigates the challenges with the outdoor plans. Inspections are on the horizon, and once it gets the green light, The Velvet Ditch can finally open its doors. This means residents and visitors to Oxford will soon have a new location to enjoy seafood dishes and a lively atmosphere, even if they can’t sip a drink outside just yet.

As for whether Foster will propose a new site plan for an outdoor space, that remains unclear. In the ever-evolving landscape of city regulations and community sentiments, it’s possible that a revised approach could win over both diners and the concerned locals. For now, all eyes are on the restaurant’s impending indoor opening, as many eagerly anticipate what The Velvet Ditch will bring to Oxford.

The Community’s Role

It’s evident that new businesses like The Velvet Ditch can stir up a mix of excitement and apprehension in the local community. While many are looking forward to a fresh dining option, it’s crucial that the restaurant’s plans consider the feedback from residents. After all, the goal should always be to create a welcoming environment for both patrons and neighbors alike.

A Bright Future

The Velvet Ditch may have hit a few bumps in the road, but with a committed owner and supportive patrons, there is a bright future ahead. As Oxford continues to grow and adapt, this seafood restaurant has the potential to become a cherished part of the Square, offering delicious meals and a friendly atmosphere.

Stay tuned for updates on The Velvet Ditch’s journey and be ready to treat your taste buds as it prepares for its grand opening!
