Oxford Elementary School Showcases Young Innovators at Science Fair
In the heart of Oxford, young minds gathered on February 3, 2016, for an exciting day filled with curiosity and discovery at the Oxford School District Lower Elementary Science Fair. More than 50 enthusiastic students from the district participated, tackling real-world questions related to the fascinating realms of science, engineering, and technology.
Advancing to the Region VII Science Fair
This science fair wasn’t just about badges and certificates; it also paved the way for the top three winners in each of the ten categories to advance to the prestigious Region VII Science Fair, set to take place at the University of Mississippi on April 6, 2016. It’s a fantastic opportunity for these scholars to showcase their projects on a larger stage.
Meet the Winners!
As the excitement built up, the winners of the event emerged, with familiar faces from both sides of the stage. In the back row, we had the talented Noah Najjar, Andrew Colby, Elijah Beene, and Scot Campbell, while the front row shone bright with stars like Malak Albadry, Nevin Foster, and Ivanna King. It’s inspiring to see so many children working hard and striving for excellence!
Not to be outdone, Della Davidson Elementary brought forward their own group of shining stars, especially from the third grade. Students such as Zoe Metcalf, Sam Bain, and Kate Tschumper took center stage, while the fourth graders also made their mark with notable names like Alyssa Alexander and Ja’Korian Austin lighting up the event.
Spotlight on COVID-19 Research
One standout project came from Oxford High School sophomore, Keerthin Karthikeyan, who focused on potential treatments for COVID-19, clinching a Best in Fair award. Karthikeyan’s innovative approach showcased the idea that natural phytochemicals might outperform traditional medications like Remdesivir when it comes to fighting the virus. With a virtual screening process named PyRx, he presented findings that indicated several phytochemicals had promising scores when tested against COVID-19 proteins. He’s not stopping there; he plans to extend his research to tackle emerging variants!
State Science and Engineering Fair Awaits
But that’s not all. A total of seven Oxford High students will be representing their school at the state science and engineering fair on April 1, following their outstanding performance at the Region VII fair on March 23. The exceptional group includes Mennah Ibrahim, Zeyad Ibrahim, Rishi Nautiyal, and more, with several students even placing first in their categories. Karthikeyan and Nautiyal earned the coveted Best of Fair recognition, sending them off to compete in the International Science and Engineering Fair in Atlanta, Georgia, later this May. Just imagine the excitement!
Recognizing Special Awards
The competition was fierce, but amidst this thrilling atmosphere, there were several special awards too! William Berry snagged the National Geographic award, while Karthikeyan also received a Regeneron Biomedical Sciences award for his contributions, and many others were recognized for their innovative work in environmental and technical fields.
Karthikeyan recently achieved a silver medal at the Genius Olympiad International Project Competition with his project on recycling Styrofoam into a useful material named “Styro-Carbon”. His impressive GPA of 4.76 stands as a testament to his hard work, with plans to triple major at the University of Mississippi.
Looking Ahead to Graduation
As we look forward, it’s exciting to note that William Berry, with a GPA of 4.73, is planning to attend Yale University to delve into environmental science and philosophy. Also, Aidan Sullivan—a shining graduate with a GPA of 4.71—will be heading to Dartmouth College to explore engineering sciences, with a minor in languages. These accomplishments represent a bright future!
The commencement ceremony for the Class of 2023 is just around the corner, scheduled for May 19 at the University of Mississippi campus. Who knows what their future holds? With talents like these, there’s no limit to what they can achieve!
