In an effort to foster positive relationships and increase engagement within the local community, the Oxford Police Department (OPD) announced its latest initiative: a Youth Night taking off on Thursday, March 28, from 6-8 p.m. at the OPD training building. This innovative program aims to introduce young individuals, from 13 years old and older, to the exciting and often underappreciated world of law enforcement.
The Youth Night event comes as a part of OPD’s ongoing initiative to connect with Oxford’s youth, whom they consider as crucial members of the town’s future. “We are passionate about serving and connecting to our community as best as we can, Oxford’s youth are our future,” Chief Jeff McCutchen of the OPD stated. He further articulated the department’s desire to ensure the youth feel they have a place in the community and that the police department is there to serve and support them.
Youth Night won’t merely serve as a social means for young individuals to meet the professionals ensuring their safety, but it will also provide an informative overview of a police officer’s daily life. From running through the day-to-day routine of patrol officers to understanding the gear used by them and learning about the specialized K-9 unit, participants are set for an insightful evening.
The OPD envisions Youth Night as a starting point for a series of similar events aimed at fostering relationships with the younger demographic. Patrol officer Mackenzie Rogers, who is heading the event, expressed her enthusiasm, “This class is an amazing opportunity to foster relationships with the younger part of our community. We want them to see what we do and see if it’s possibly a career they can be interested in down the line.”
The event, hosted by OPD Explorer Post 50, serves not only to foster community relations but also as a recruitment drive. By offering a sneak peek into law enforcement life, the Department hopes to inspire a new generation of police officers, bolstering the ranks with locals who understand and take pride in their community.
As Oxford eagerly anticipates the upcoming Youth Night, it’s clear OPD’s effort to involve and connect with the community is well-founded. This initiative isn’t just about forging bonds and equality; it’s about empowering the city’s youth and offering them a chance to understand, appreciate, and potentially join the ranks of those who protect and serve their community.
