Oxford Police Officer Disarms and Apprehends Armed Assault Suspect
In an incident that has left the residents of Oxford, Mississippi in awe, a swift-acting patrolling police officer remarkably disarmed a suspect during a disruption in the early hours of March 3, 2024. The suspect, who was found fighting alongside a gas pump, was aiming a stolen firearm at the officer.
A Band of Onlookers Gathered
The disturbing event unfolded around 1:58 am at the Double Quick parking lot where the Oxford Police Department had been alerted of a ruckus. Upon arriving, the patrolling officer was greeted by the sight of a large crowd that had conglomerated as silent spectators to the unfolding incident.
Face Off at the Gas Pump
Going about their duty, the officer noticed a brawl between two males close to a gas pump. On approaching them and trying to incapacitate the man who seemed to dominate the fight, the officer felt the chill of a metallic object pressed against their temple – a firearm. Reacting deftly, the officer disarmed the suspect, identified as Jacqueline Denise Giles, a 36-year-old Oxford resident. Giles was then taken into custody without further occurrence.
A Stolen Firearm
An investigation revealed that the firearm was stolen from Oxford in 2020. The incident reiterated the dangers the law enforcement officials face every day as they go about maintaining peace in the community. Highlighting this, Chief Jeff McCutchen remarked, “There is a reason why we stay on alert. There is a reason why we take every call seriously.”
Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer
Giles was later booked for Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer and Possession of a Stolen Firearm. The Municipal Court Judge assigned Giles a heavy bond of $275,000. Commending the police officer’s laudable response to the dangerous scenario, Chief McCutchen imparted, “This incident has proven yet again that timely intervention by our officers can thwart potential tragedies. I am exceedingly proud of our officers’ commitment to safeguarding our community.”

This incident marks the second drastic occurrence in just two weeks that could have resulted in catastrophic endings. The Oxford Police Department has been working diligently to prevent such violent incidents and maintain harmony in the community. Chief McCutchen affirmed that the Department is showing no sign of straying from their commitment.
