Oxford Police Department Gears Up for Transition to New State-of-the-Art Headquarters

Oxford Police Department Set for Exciting Move to New Headquarters

In the charming city of Oxford, big changes are on the horizon for the local police department! The Oxford Police Department (OPD) is set to make its thrilling move to a brand-new building on Industrial Park Drive by December 12, 2024. Special Projects Director Mark Levy recently shared this exciting news during a meeting with the Oxford Board of Aldermen.

New Beginnings at a New Location

The new OPD headquarters is an impressive 40,000 square feet facility that promises to enhance the department’s efficiency and service to the community. Levy highlighted that, with their transition into this state-of-the-art building, they will be leaving their current premises empty. During the meeting, he requested permission to seek bids for the renovation and remodeling of the existing OPD building.

Once the police department relocates, the current building will undergo some exciting renovations to transform it into office space for the Oxford Park Commission and various other city offices. Levy expressed eagerness to kick off the renovation project as early as January 2025. This transformation demonstrates the city’s commitment to adapting to its growing needs and making efficient use of its spaces.

A Vision for Growth

The decision to develop this new police headquarters dates back to 2021 when the Oxford Board of Aldermen approved a plan to convert the former Oxford Enterprise Center into the new OPD headquarters. The upgrade was deemed essential to accommodate the rapid expansion of the department in response to the community’s growth.

The new building is not just an expansion; it’s part of a broader vision for improved community service. The facility will boast a large dispatch area, specially designed spaces for victim services, including a cozy conference room and even a playroom for children, ensuring that family needs are met during tough times. Moreover, it will include a training building and a coffee shop-style patrol area with flexible workstations.

Funding the Future

The construction of this new $12 million facility received significant backing with the state Legislature granting the city approximately $6 million in grants specifically for the building. On top of that, OPD secured a $200,000 federal grant that will be allocated for much-needed equipment. To manage the remaining costs, the city plans to utilize a bond, ensuring that the financial aspects are handled smartly and responsibly.

What’s Next for the Community?

Edmonton Oilers are scheduled to face the Nashville Predators at the Bridgestone Arena on October 17, offering sports fans an action-packed evening. Additionally, the Memphis Grizzlies will be playing against the Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday, October 30, promising more thrilling basketball action.

Wrapping Up

In short, the upcoming move and renovation projects reflect the city’s dedication to bettering public services and creating a warm and welcoming environment for both law enforcement and the community members they serve. It’s an exciting time for Oxford, and the anticipation of the new OPD building has the community buzzing with enthusiasm for what the future holds!
