Oxford Police Department Takes Action Against Drink Spiking

Oxford, Mississippi – With the new school year kicking off at the University of Mississippi, the Oxford Police Department (OPD) has ramped up efforts to keep locals safe from drink spiking at nearby bars. Recent reports of potential druggings at these establishments have raised concerns, prompting OPD to step in.

Safe Site for Partygoers

In response to these alarming reports, OPD has set up a Safe Site tent conveniently located across from the 11th Street Alley and Funky’s. This initiative aims to offer essential resources to help partygoers protect themselves from harmful substances.

Inside the tent, patrons can find drink coasters that double as testing kits. These coasters are designed to detect common chemicals found in spiked drinks, such as Gamma Hydroxybutyrate (GHB) and Ketamine. The process is simple: individuals can dab a small amount of their drink onto the test areas of the coaster. If the color of the coaster changes to dark blue, it indicates the presence of these substances.

Step-by-Step Guidance

The coasters also come with step-by-step instructions on how to conduct the test. Additionally, they include important contact information for the Oxford Police Department and the Victim Coordinator, providing further support for those who may feel unsafe.

Nightcap Drink Covers for Extra Safety

Another tool offered at the Safe Site is the nightcap drink cover. This cover is worn on the wrist like a bracelet and can be placed over open glasses to prevent anyone from tampering with drinks. This added layer of protection ensures that partygoers can enjoy their night out with less worry.

Stay Vigilant and Report Suspicious Activity

OPD urges community members to remain vigilant during their outings. “The big thing is, if you see something, say something,” said an OPD spokesperson. They emphasize the importance of reporting any suspicious activity quickly, as early action allows law enforcement to investigate and address potentially harmful situations.

Additionally, they remind people to keep track of their drinks. “Don’t leave drinks unattended, and don’t accept drinks from strangers,” the spokesperson warned. They further stressed that if someone starts feeling different after consuming a drink, especially when it’s outside of their usual limit, they should seek medical attention immediately. Quick action can help identify any substances before they leave a person’s system.

Community Support and Safety Initiatives

Residents and students are encouraged to take advantage of these resources to ensure their safety while enjoying the vibrant nightlife in Oxford. With the new semester in full swing, the OPD is committed to reducing incidents of drink spiking and enhancing the safety of everyone in the community.

The Oxford Police Department’s proactive measures, including the Safe Site and the availability of testing kits and drink covers, signify a community-focused approach to address this pressing issue. Everyone can play a part in creating a safer environment by staying informed and taking the necessary precautions.
