Oxford Police Department Takes Steps to Combat Drink Spiking

Oxford, Mississippi – With the start of the new school year at the University of Mississippi, the Oxford Police Department (OPD) is intensifying efforts to protect residents and visitors from the threat of drink spiking at local bars. Following reports of possible druggings at local venues last week, OPD is taking proactive measures to increase safety in the nightlife scene.

Investigations Underway

In response to the recent incidents, OPD is reviewing surveillance video from the bars to verify complaints and ensure a proper investigation into any suspicious activity. OPD spokesperson, McCutchen, expressed the department’s commitment to tackle this disturbing trend head-on. “We are examining the facts to promptly address any incidents,” McCutchen stated.

Safe Site Tent: A New Initiative

To aid partygoers in protecting themselves, the OPD has set up a Safe Site tent across from the bustling 11th Street Alley and Funky’s. This tent acts as a resource center where visitors can find essential tools to guard against drink spiking.

The tent features drink coasters that double as testing kits for malicious substances. These coasters are designed to help users identify the presence of two common chemicals often found in spiked drinks: Gamma Hydroxybutyrate (GHB) and Ketamine. To use the coasters, patrons simply dab a small amount of their drink onto the test areas and wait a few seconds. If the color changes to dark blue, it indicates the possible presence of these harmful substances.

Education and Prevention

Along with testing coasters, the Safe Site tent also distributes nightcap drink covers. These lightweight covers can be worn like a bracelet and easily slipped over an open glass to keep it secure against potential tampering. This two-pronged approach aims to educate individuals on safety precaution measures while enjoying themselves.

McCutchen emphasized the importance of vigilance during outings. “The big thing is, if you see something, say something,” he advised. “Report suspicious activity as quickly as possible. It gives us a chance to investigate and hopefully intercept anything harmful.”

Staying Vigilant

Aside from the resources available at the Safe Site tent, McCutchen encouraged everyone to be mindful of their environment. He stated, “Pay attention to your drinks. Don’t leave drinks unattended or accept them from strangers.” He also advised that if someone feels differently than usual after consuming a drink, especially when they know their limits, they should seek medical attention immediately. “The quicker we respond, the better chance we have of identifying any substances before they leave your system,” McCutchen noted.

Your Safety is Important

As the college community settles into the new academic year, OPD’s efforts aim to promote a safe, enjoyable experience for all. It is important for everyone to take personal responsibility and remain aware of their surroundings. By utilizing tools such as the testing coasters and drink covers, partygoers can enjoy a fun night out while minimizing risks.

The Oxford Police Department encourages the community to stay informed and take advantage of resources available to ensure a safe environment. With preventative measures and a proactive community, the goal is to eliminate the threat of drink spiking and promote safe nightlife practices.
