Phone Scam Arrest Scene

Two Arrested in Oxford After Phone Scam Report

Oxford, MS – The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office has successfully arrested two men from Georgia who are accused of scamming a local resident. This arrest was made possible through collaboration with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, aiming to protect citizens from fraudulent activities.

Details of the Scam

On Thursday, the sheriff’s office received a complaint concerning a potential fraud. The victim reported that they received a phone call from someone claiming to be with Amazon. During the conversation, the caller asked if the victim had purchased an expensive $4,000 computer. The victim promptly denied making such a purchase.

The caller then informed the victim that their assets had been frozen and that the Social Security Administration would be reaching out to them shortly. Not long after, the victim received another call that appeared to come from the Social Security Administration. During this call, the scammer sent a picture showing an I.D. badge and claimed that urgent action was needed to safeguard the victim’s funds.

Deceptive Instructions

The scammer instructed the victim to withdraw all their money from the bank, suggesting they only keep $1,500 in their account. Following these dubious directions, the victim complied, fearing that their money was at risk. The scammers assured the victim that they would pick up the money soon for safekeeping, stating that it would be held by the U.S. Department of Treasury.

Upon seeing suspicious signs, the victim decided to report the incident to the authorities. This led the sheriff’s office to act swiftly, setting up an operation to catch the scammers in the act.

The Arrest

After the victim agreed to meet the scammers at their home, law enforcement was ready and waiting. When the two suspects arrived, they were taken into custody without resistance. The men were identified as Nasruddin Bhai Nooruddin, 52, and Chaturali Alauidin Roy, 69, both from Atlanta, Georgia.

Currently, both Nooruddin and Roy are being held by the sheriff’s office and are awaiting a bail hearing. This incident highlights the ongoing issue of phone scams that can target vulnerable individuals.

Public Awareness and Precautions

The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office has reported an increase in similar fraud attempts where scammers impersonate various law enforcement agencies. They are urging the public to remain vigilant and to never give personal information to anyone they do not know.

If residents receive suspicious phone calls, they are encouraged to report them to the sheriff’s office by calling 662-234-6421. The law enforcement agency emphasizes that taking such fraud cases seriously can help prevent further victimization in the community.

Conclusion

The recent scam attempt in Oxford serves as a reminder for everyone to stay alert and protect their personal information. As scams continue to evolve, it is essential for the public to be aware of the tactics used by criminals and to reach out to authorities if they suspect fraudulent activities.
