Sponsor Our ArticlesThe qualification period for potential candidates in the Oxford municipal elections is closing soon, with only four days left for individuals interested in running. Current candidates include sitting aldermen, while new challengers in Ward 1, Erin Smith and William Summers Mayo, stir excitement. Incumbent mayor Robyn Tannehill is the sole candidate for mayor. The primary elections are scheduled for April 1, 2025, and voters will cast their ballots at the Oxford Conference Center. Qualification packets are available for those wishing to run and help shape the local government.
Citizens of Oxford, the time is ticking! There are only four days left for potential candidates to qualify for the exciting municipal government race happening soon in our lovely town. As the qualification period nears its end, all eyes are on the candidates who might lead our beloved Oxford moving forward.
If you’re interested in throwing your hat in the ring, be sure to note that the qualification period wraps up at 5 p.m. on Friday, January 31, 2025. The excitement is palpable as we prepare for the upcoming elections. Only candidates who meet the necessary qualification criteria can officially run for their chosen seats.
As of now, only the sitting aldermen in wards 2-6 have successfully qualified to run again. Meanwhile, Ward 1 is creating a buzz with new challengers. The current incumbent, Rick Addy, has not yet qualified to retain his position. But don’t count Ward 1 out just yet! Two new faces, Erin Smith and William Summers Mayo, have stepped up and qualified for the alderman position, making this a race to watch!
On the mayoral front, incumbent Robyn Tannehill is the lone candidate who has submitted her paperwork to continue leading Oxford. As we inch closer to the election date, we’ll see if any challengers emerge for this significant position.
Curious about the criteria? To qualify, candidates must have lived in their respective wards for at least two years and must not have any felony convictions on their records. If you’re a Republican or Democrat, don’t forget there’s a $10 fee to file your candidacy. On the flip side, independent candidates have a slightly different requirement: they need to gather 50 signatures from qualified voters in Oxford but are exempt from any filing fees. This is a fantastic opportunity for fresh voices to join our local government!
Mark your calendars, everyone! The primary election is set for April 1, 2025. If we have a situation where no candidate gets enough votes, don’t fret! A runoff will take place on April 22, ensuring that every vote counts. For those who may be unable to make it to the polls, remember that absentee voting for the primary begins on February 17, 2025.
Once we tackle the primary elections, the general election will take center stage on June 3, 2025. The good news is that there is no runoff planned for the general election, making things a bit simpler for our already busy voter community.
All registered Oxford voters will cast their ballots at the Oxford Conference Center. It’s always a thrill to get out and make your voice heard, so be sure to show up and support your preferred candidates!
If you’re thinking about running, qualification packets are available at City Hall and the Lafayette County Clerk’s Office. Just remember that all submissions must be turned in at the City Clerk’s Office located in City Hall. It’s a straightforward process that could help shape the future of our community!
As we gear up for the elections, expect weekly updates about candidate qualifications until the deadline passes. It’s an exciting time for Oxford, so keep your eyes peeled as we approach this pivotal moment for our local government!
