Road Work Coming to Oxford and Lafayette County!

Big news for residents and visitors of Oxford and surrounding areas! The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) is gearing up for some road work that could affect your daily commute. So grab a cup of coffee and get comfortable, because we’re diving into the details of what’s coming up!

Bridge Deck Scanning on South Lamar Boulevard

First up, mark your calendars for Monday, April 7, because starting at 8 a.m. that day, lanes on South Lamar Boulevard over the highway 6 will be closing for the day until 8 a.m. on Tuesday, April 8. This temporary closure is necessary for bridge deck scanning, a crucial process to ensure the bridge remains safe for all travelers.

This means that if you’re headed that way, you’ll need to slow down! Traffic could be a little more sluggish than usual, so it’s a great chance to take the scenic route if you can. Make sure to stay alert and give yourself a little extra time to reach your destination.

State Highway 310 Closure for Bridge Repairs

But that’s not all! From 8 a.m. on Wednesday, April 9, until 5 p.m. on July 21, another road will be closed. State Highway 310 over Greasy Creek in Lafayette County is scheduled for some serious bridge repairs. So if this is part of your daily drive, it’s best to plan ahead and find an alternate route.

It’s not just about repairs; it’s also about keeping everyone safe on the roads. MDOT urges all motorists to be mindful of their speed and the changing traffic patterns during this time. So, if you’re crossing through Lafayette County during those months, ensure you’re following the road signs and staying informed about alternative paths.

Exciting Changes in Oxford: New Roundabout on University Avenue

In addition to the MDOT projects, there’s construction happening right in the heart of Oxford. If you’ve been traveling on University Avenue, you may have noticed some work being done between McLarty Road and the Kroger store. That’s right—construction is underway for a brand new roundabout!

This project isn’t small potatoes, with a budget exceeding $4 million and an expected duration of at least 18 months. The aim of adding these roundabouts is to reduce traffic congestion and enhance safety compared to traditional stop lights and signs.

A lot of folks are already familiar with the other roundabouts in Oxford, and the hope is that this new addition will make traveling through this busy area more efficient. But during this construction period, keep your eyes peeled and drive cautiously when near the site. Safety first!

Stay Updated!

To keep up with all the latest on these road updates, MDOT has made it easy for you! Just head over to MDOTtraffic.com or download the MDOT Traffic mobile app for real-time updates. You can also follow along on social media by checking out @MississippiDOT on Facebook and Twitter.

So, whether you’re a local or just passing through, be prepared for these changes in Oxford and Lafayette County. Thanks for tuning in, and safe travels!
