Sponsor Our ArticlesOxford, Mississippi has been buzzing lately with a mix of developments that have caught the community’s attention. From law enforcement actions regarding cannabis laws to infrastructure improvements, there’s certainly a lot happening in our beloved town.
On Monday, September 23, 2024, agents from the Mississippi Alcoholic Beverage Control Bureau (ABC) teamed up with local law enforcement, including the Oxford Police Department and the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department, to conduct a significant raid at Hybrid CBD, a CBD dispensary located on Jackson Avenue. The actions stemmed from ongoing investigations into violations of the Mississippi Medical Cannabis Act.
Local sources indicate that agents spent several hours at the location, even making visits to another dispensary owned by the same proprietor, as well as the owner’s home. According to a statement released by the Department of Revenue, which oversees ABC, this operation was a part of a larger investigation targeting several illicit activities. One individual has been taken into custody with charges still pending, and while this story develops, officials have held back on sharing further details as the investigation continues.
In more positive news, Oxford’s infrastructure is set to receive a substantial boost! Last week, both the Mississippi Senate and House of Representatives approved funding of a whopping $160 million intended for the four-laning of Highway 7 South from the Highway 2 area, enhancing connectivity for residents and visitors alike. This improvement aims to make commutes easier and to accommodate potential growth in our beautiful town.
In addition to these major events, the Oxford community is invited to a screening of the documentary PTSD 911 this coming Monday night. First responders and community members who appreciate their dedicated services are encouraged to attend. It’s an opportunity to raise awareness and honor those who serve.
Meanwhile, law enforcement has had their hands full with various incidents around town. Two individuals were recently jailed after allegedly causing damage to another person’s vehicle. This occurred on March 17th, prompting swift action from the Oxford Police Department.
Additionally, a domestic assault case has surfaced that involved an unresponsive female. The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call that has triggered an ongoing investigation. Our thoughts are with anyone affected by these unfortunate situations.
In the world of crime, a man from Memphis was sentenced to an extensive time in prison—62 months to be exact—for his role in defrauding the Small Business Administration. His actions are a stark reminder of the importance of ethics in business practices.
Moreover, closer to home, an Oxford resident has been implicated in check fraud charges stemming from an incident earlier this September. Officers from the Oxford Police Department responded to the situation swiftly, showcasing their commitment to ensuring the safety and security of our community.
With so much happening simultaneously in Oxford, it’s clear that the community is in a state of flux. As residents, being informed about these developments can help us stay connected and engaged with what’s going on around us. We’ll continue to keep our ears to the ground and our eyes on the news as more updates unfold in the coming days.
Stay tuned for more information, and let’s all work together to foster a safe and thriving environment in Oxford!
