It’s a somber yet celebratory time in Oxford, Mississippi, as the community remembers Cullen Lee Kennedy, who left this world peacefully at the age of 66, surrounded by his beloved family on December 12, 2024. Lee’s story is one that resonates deeply, touching the lives of many with his warmth, dedication, and love for his community.
Born on January 25, 1958, in nearby Magee, Mississippi, to the late Billy Ray and Barbara Kent Maddox Kennedy, Lee was a proud resident of this vibrant state. He grew up in Magee, where he made memories and lifelong friendships, eventually graduating from Simpson County Academy in 1976. With a passion for sports, he joined the tennis team at Hinds Community College before moving on to The University of Mississippi.
Lee entered the world of work at the Magical Post Office in August 1979, where he dedicated over thirty years to serving his community at various post offices, including Mendenhall and Oxford. In a move reflective of his commitment to service, he also worked at the Mail Distribution Center in Jackson and even contributed to Campus Mail at Ole Miss, putting in nearly 40 years of his life to ensure smooth postal operations.
Lee was more than just a postal worker; he was a devoted husband to his wife, Sandra, with whom he shared more than 43 years of happiness. Together, they raised three wonderful children: Jeremy, Bethany, and Stephany, creating a warm and loving family atmosphere in Mendenhall. Their home was filled with laughter, love, and the joyful chaos that comes with raising kids, all while being supported by grandparents and a close-knit circle of friends.
Along with his family, Lee was a dedicated member of the Mendenhall United Methodist Church, where he took on the important role of running the sound system during Sunday services. After relocating to Oxford, the family found a new spiritual home at the Oxford-University United Methodist Church, forming meaningful relationships, especially with Reverend Warren Black.
They say that a family that plays together stays together, and Lee embodied this spirit wholeheartedly. He loved every moment spent on the tennis court and golf course, sharing these cherished pastimes with both childhood friends and family. Lee was the proudest dad, cheering on his kids at sporting events and creating unforgettable memories, like sipping on sweet tea while watching Ole Miss games or sharing the excitement of attending The Masters with his son, Jeremy.
Lee’s legacy is also forever etched in the hearts of his three adorable grandchildren: Mae, Brunson, and Owen, who lovingly called him “Opie.” His greatest joy was being an active and engaging part of their lives, creating bonds that will last a lifetime.
Lee’s passing leaves a void not only in his family but also among the remains of his wide network of friends and loved ones. He is survived by his wife Sandra, children Jeremy, Bethany, and Stephany, brother Craig, and many adored relatives.
The community will honor Lee’s dedication and spirit during a visitation held on Sunday, December 15, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Tutor Funeral Home in Magee. A funeral service will follow on Monday, December 16, at 10:00 a.m., with a burial service at Garden of Memories in Oxford at 3:00 p.m. Family and friends are encouraged to come together in remembrance and support.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests honoring Lee’s memory through donations to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, organizations that reflect Lee’s caring nature and commitment to helping those in need.
As this wonderful man embarks on his next adventure, those who had the privilege of knowing him will carry his spirit in their hearts forever.
