Oxford Man Arrested for Commercial Burglary and Possession of Stolen Firearm with Ongoing Investigation

Oxford, Mississippi: Local Man Arrested on Charges of Commercial Burglary and Possession of a Stolen Firearm

The Incident

Antavious Dukes, a 21-year-old resident of Oxford, Mississippi was arrested recently after the Oxford Police Department (OPD) received reports of a stolen firearm. The victim reported his gun missing from his vehicle on May 7, 2024, prompting an immediate investigation by local law enforcement agencies.

Suspect’s Arrest and Charges

The OPD was later informed by investigators with the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department on June 25, 2024, that they held Dukes in custody on charges of Possession of a Stolen Firearm. Additionally, Dukes faces charges of Commercial Burglary as well. It wasn’t specified whether the burglary charge was directly related to the reported stolen firearm.

Initial Hearing and Bond

Authorities presented Dukes before a Municipal Court judge for his initial bond hearing, where the judge set his bond at $20,000. However, the County Court revoked this bond due to Dukes being out on a precedent felony charge. Dukes is currently held without bond.

Cross-Department Collaboration

OPD extended their gratitude to the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department for assisting them in the investigation, emphasizing the importance of inter-departmental collaboration when dealing with matters of community safety.

In Light of the Incident

This case stands as a reminder that community vigilance often catalyzes quicker responses from law enforcement agencies. The original walk-in report allowed OPD to begin their investigation promptly, prove instrumental in recovering the stolen firearm, and ensure that one more potentially dangerous offender was off the streets of Oxford.

The OPD urges residents to remain watchful and report any suspicious activities in their vicinity to help maintain the safety and security of Oxford.

Continuing Investigation

Meanwhile, the case remains under further investigation as local authorities complete their due diligence. Details around the commercial burglary Dukes is charged with remain unclear. The authorities did not disclose if the stolen firearm was used in the commission of the burglary or whether these two incidents are connected. Stay tuned for updates as and when they come to light.
