A Review Of City Of Oxford, Mississippi Board of Aldermen Meeting March 5, 2024

On Tuesday, March 5, 2024, the City of Oxford, Mississippi held its traditional Board of Aldermen meeting, aimed at addressing matters within the city departments and discussing various requests and approvals. The meeting was held at 5:00 pm in the City Hall Courtroom.

Adopting The Agenda

The event began with the traditional adoption of the agenda for the meeting following the mayor’s report. In his report, Mississippi Mayor Ashley Atkinson took the attendees through the minutes of their previous regular meeting on February 20, 2024. The board approved accounts for all city departments, setting the stage for substantial city-wide discussions.

Consent Agenda Considerations

The Aldermen’s meeting featured various considerations on its consent agenda. Highlights included Fixed Assets Management requests for the Buildings & Grounds and Development Services Departments. There was a call for a Homeland Security Grant application, employee resignations, promotions, and recruitments across departments, retirement resolutions and decisions about volunteers within the Oxford Animal Resource Center.

Donations and Adjustments

The board appreciated donations from Chick-fil-A for the Stronger Together Oxford initiative and the donation of a scrap vehicle from John and Reanna Mayoral for training purposes in the Oxford Fire Department. Subsequently, the Board approved water and sewer adjustments in accordance with the Oxford Utilities Leak Adjustment Policy.

Travel Requests and Event Permits

The Aldermen also considered numerous travel requests for professional development across several departments, with conferences and training sessions planned in locations such as Jackson, Biloxi, and Savannah. As part of the agenda, there was a request for appointments to the Mayor’s Commission on Disabilities and parade/assembly permits for events including a Law Enforcement Torch Run, a car show, and a Fallen Heroes Run.

Urban Planning and Budgeting

Urban planning factors into the meeting agenda, with Final Plat Approval sought for several locations for property and stadium expansion. An ordinance amending different sections of the Land Development Code was read at the hearing. In line with financial management, the meeting tabled a discussion on the approval list of budget re-allocations and amendments, and potential amendments to the Code of Ordinances regarding water rates adjustments.

Professional Assignments

Last but not least, requests for employees across the Development Services and Buildings and Grounds departments to attend a crucial Snow Conference in Kansas City and Civil Engineering Projects were made alongside directives on public work contracts for professional services and maintenance projects.

The meeting ended on the note of considering an executive session followed by the standard adjournment. Oxford’s Board of Aldermen meeting on March 5 ensured several critical citywide discussions were held and significant decisions were made for the overall development of the City of Oxford, Mississippi.
