Oxford, Mississippi’s Essential City Matters Explored

On Tuesday, March 19, 2024, the City of Oxford, Mississippi, held its regular Board of Aldermen Meeting at 5:00 pm in the City Hall Courtroom. A wealth of topics were expounded upon, including the approval of city department accounts, considerations for fixed asset management, grant applications, human resources, travel requests, and much more.

Fixed Assets and Grant Permissions

Items on the agenda included a request for permission to declare equipment surplus in the Oxford Park Commission department and the authorization of its disposal. The board requested permission to offer a Homeland Security Grant for the fiscal year 2024 aimed at technology upgrades and a $2,000 grant through the AED Superstore which will be utilized to purchase an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) for the Emergency Operations Center.

Human Resources and Staffing Permissions

A series of human resources-related requests also entered review. The board sought permission to promote three employees within the Environmental Services Department. Furthermore, they requested the retirement and hiring of employees in the Development Services-Engineering Department and the Oxford Fire Department. Necessary permissions for approving two reserve officers, promoting an Oxford Police Department employee, and approving unpaid volunteers for the Oxford Animal Resource Center were also deliberated upon.

Travel Requests and Approvals

Travel requests for city employees were another focal point during the meeting. These included attendance to several conferences and training events spanning 2024, setting the groundwork for professional development in various city departments. The costs for these trips were detailed and ranged from no cost to the City to an estimated maximum of $2,250.00.

Community and Infrastructure

Several important community and infrastructure projects took center-stage during the discussion points. These include adopting resolutions for the retirements of employees in the Development Services-Engineering Department and the Oxford Fire Department, deliberation on property development and improvement plans, bidding for essential technologies for the Oxford Police Station, and proposals for engineering projects including a multi-way stop intersection and water tank re-painting.

Looking Forward

Wrapping up the meeting, the board highlighted an executive session and discussed reconvening for their next meeting on Monday, March 25, 2024, at 1:00 pm. The City of Oxford, Mississippi Board of Aldermen worked diligently to address the diverse needs of the city, ensuring that community growth and wellbeing continues to be at the heart of their agenda.
