Oxford Celebrates Local Arts Advocate with Jazz Parade

On August 30, 2024, the city of Oxford is gearing up for a vibrant celebration of art and music with a jazz parade dedicated to the memory of Ron Shapiro. This event serves as the grand finale of the annual Hoka Days, a series of art-centered activities aimed at engaging the Oxford-Lafayette community.

A Tribute to Ron Shapiro

Hoka Days began in 2019 as a way to honor Ron Shapiro, a noted arts patron and a cherished figure in Oxford’s culture. Shapiro’s influence in the community was profound, as he consistently encouraged residents to explore local artistic, cultural, and musical opportunities. According to Wayne Andrews, the director of the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council (YAC) and a friend of Shapiro, “Ron was a champion of culture as a builder of community.”

What to Expect on Parade Day

The festival is set to close with a special Second Line and Art Showcase, which will take place at Powerhouse. The Second Line, a joyous jazz parade tradition from New Orleans, honors the lives of those who have passed away. Musicians held a second line for Shapiro shortly after his death, and this year’s event is expected to draw crowds once again to celebrate his legacy.

Starting at 6 p.m., attendees can join in the procession from the Oxford Square to the Powerhouse, where they’ll be treated to a local art exhibition and live music following the parade. Andrews adds, “We hope to bring back some receptions for the art exhibits, paired with experiences like the Second Line, to attract new audiences to local visual artists.”

Showcasing Local Artists

The featured artists have been selected through the YAC’s gallery series programs, which allow artists of all skill levels to submit their work. Those interested can find more information and apply online. Local artist participation is a crucial part of the event as it showcases the diverse talents from the area.

Community Engagement Through Art

This year’s Hoka Days also included various events leading up to the parade, such as the recent Iron Bartender competition on August 9, showcasing the best drinks from local restaurants. Participants like Jordan Jones Higginbotham, who represented GRIT in Taylor, Mississippi, expressed how empowering the experience was. “It was chaotic and fun; the feedback from experienced bartenders really boosted my confidence,” she shared.

But the celebrations weren’t limited to professional skills. The festival also featured casual, family-friendly events. A hot sauce making workshop took place on August 11, led by a local saucier, while families enjoyed a screening of Trolls Band Together on August 17, organized by a local Girl Scouts troop.

In addition to these activities, the festival included performances from Anubis Improv and dance showcases featuring butoh, a unique style of traditional Japanese dance.

The Importance of Community Events

Higginbotham emphasized how events like Hoka Days play a vital role in fostering community ties. “These events bring people together, allowing them to learn about their local area and discover new activities,” she said.

As the Hoka Days events conclude, the community is expected to come together for one last joyful celebration in honor of Ron Shapiro. With music, art, and a spirit of collaboration, Oxford is set to mark this occasion with a memorable parade that promotes creativity and unity within the community.

Looking Ahead

For those who wish to join the upcoming festivities or get involved in future events, further details can be found on the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council’s website. The vibrant artistic spirit of Oxford continues as it cherishes its local culture and celebrates those who have made significant contributions to it.
