Fall Events Bring Excitement to Oxford

Oxford is gearing up for a lively fall season, with students returning to town and football games on the horizon. The Oxford Board of Aldermen recently approved several permits for an array of exciting events planned over the coming months, ensuring the community will have plenty to enjoy.

New Musical Event: Square Jam Session

This year, one popular event will not take place: the Square Jam, which traditionally introduced the University of Mississippi basketball teams through fun games and challenges. While the reason for its cancellation this fall has not been disclosed, a new event, the Square Jam Session Music Event, is set to take its place. This inaugural concert will be held from 5 to 8:45 p.m. on the Square in front of City Hall.

The Square Jam Session promises to be a free music concert featuring two yet-to-be-announced bands. Organizers from Visit Oxford are currently finalizing the details and contracts for the performers. Food trucks will also be parked behind City Hall for attendees looking to grab a bite.

Upcoming Parades and Events

Aside from the musical event, the city has scheduled several parades. One of the first is the Second Line Parade, taking place on August 30 from 6 to 6:30 p.m. This event will honor the late Ron Shapiro, with the public gathering inside The Lyric Oxford before walking behind a Second Line band to The Powerhouse Community Arts Center for a concert and art show. This event is free and open to everyone, with no motorized vehicles or floats included.

Next, the Ole Miss Homecoming Parade is organized by the Student Activities Association for September 27. This parade kicks off at 5:15 p.m. in Lyceum Circle, then proceeds east on University Avenue, up South Lamar, and wraps around the east side of the courthouse finishing at the same spot.

Another fun event to look forward to is the Witches Ride set for October 21. This parade will commence at the Mid-Town Shopping Center at 6:30 p.m., travel down North Lamar toward the Square, before returning to the shopping center around 7:15 p.m.

Oxford Activities and Community Spirit

Oxford has always been known for its vibrant community spirit, and this fall looks no different. Along with the excitement of parades and a new musical event, residents can enjoy the atmosphere as students return to campus and many traditions continue. While the cancellation of the Square Jam may come as a disappointment to some, the introduction of new events indicates a robust attempt to keep the spirit alive and engage the community.

Local officials and community organizers are excited about what this fall will bring, and it looks like Oxford is ready for a season filled with music, camaraderie, and celebration. As details continue to solidify regarding the events, the residents are encouraged to mark their calendars and join in the fun. With food, music, and parades, this autumn in Oxford aims to be memorable!

Conclusion

As we step into fall, Oxford is poised to be bustling with activities. Make sure to participate in the events that bring our community together and showcase the rich culture of our wonderful city.
