Sponsor Our ArticlesOxford is abuzz with the announcement of an economic development strategic plan unveiled by the Oxford-Lafayette County Economic Development Foundation. Led by CEO Ryan Miller, the plan focuses on collaboration among local stakeholders to enhance economic opportunities while preserving the community’s unique charm. With the input of residents through a community survey, the initiative aims to create a thriving environment for businesses and families in the region, promising exciting developments in the years ahead.
The vibrant city of Oxford, nestled right in the heart of Lafayette County, is buzzing with excitement as the Oxford-Lafayette County Economic Development Foundation gears up to unveil its comprehensive economic development strategic plan. Announced in October 2024, this plan is poised to set the course for the region’s future growth. The focus is on expanding economic opportunities while carefully preserving the community’s unique charm that makes Oxford one of the most appealing places to live and work.
The mastermind behind this initiative is the Economic Development Foundation’s CEO, Ryan Miller, who emphasized the need for collaboration among Oxford, Lafayette County, and the University of Mississippi. This partnership is vital to harnessing the strengths of each entity and creating a thriving environment for local businesses and community members alike.
To help pave the way for this economic blueprint, the foundation has enlisted the expertise of Boyette Strategic Advisors, led by Del Boyette. This firm will conduct an economic impact evaluation, assess workforce strategies, and perform a feasibility study specifically for Lafayette County. This comprehensive approach will enable the foundation to create a plan rooted in reality and backed by data.
Oxford and Lafayette County have experienced significant economic growth over the past two decades, with the University of Mississippi playing a pivotal role as the region’s largest employer. The university’s soaring enrollment figures have led to tangible benefits, including substantial residential and economic development in the area. The focus has shifted from traditional industrial recruitment to a new model known as “People Based Economic Development.” This evolving strategy has fostered a vibrant mix of retirees and students, enhancing the city’s rich personality.
The benefits are clear. Increased tax revenues generated from local growth have facilitated improvements in schools and infrastructure, creating a better quality of life for all residents. Additionally, the Economic Development Foundation has ambitious plans to leverage the resources of both the University of Mississippi and Lafayette County to maximize future growth opportunities.
Looking ahead, there’s much to be excited about. The foundation is planning ambitious recruitment opportunities on a newly acquired 45 acres in the Max D. Hipp Industrial Park, thanks to a recently funded site development grant. This initiative is expected to breathe new life into the area, attracting new businesses and creating more job opportunities for residents. With plans for various projects anticipated in 2025, it’s clear that positive change is on the horizon for Oxford and Lafayette County.
Ryan Miller, who stepped into the CEO role in April 2024 after graduating from the University of Mississippi in 2002, brings a wealth of experience in economic development to the table. His leadership promises to be a guiding force for the foundation as they work diligently on this strategic plan, aiming to not only enhance economic opportunities but also to preserve the authenticity that makes Oxford such a special place.
