OXFORD – In what he describes as a “season of recalibration,” Ryan Miller, new CEO of the Oxford Lafayette Economic Development Foundation, is focusing on how to steer the organization toward future success. His message emphasizes the need for a clearer strategy as the foundation prepares its master plan for the coming years.
Miller, who has a strong connection to the Oxford community, completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Mississippi in 2002, obtaining a degree in international studies. He continued his education, earning a law degree in 2008. Before stepping into the role of CEO at the development foundation this past March, he played a crucial role in launching and leading the Community and Economic Development group from its inception until 2021. He then went on to serve as the executive director of Accelerate Mississippi, positioning him well for his current position.
According to Miller, the aim of this recalibration is to define the foundation’s goals and identify the necessary steps to achieve them effectively. “We want to create a roadmap for the next several years that is not only practical but also visionary,” he stated. The focus is on sustainable development that will stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and enhance the quality of life in Oxford and Lafayette County.
Part of the organization’s greater vision includes addressing the workforce needs of the area. Miller pointed out that as new industries arrive, there will be increased demands for skilled workers. The foundation plans to work closely with local educational institutions and training programs to ensure that residents are equipped with the skills employers are seeking.
Miller has made it clear that community engagement will be a top priority going forward. “We need to collaborate with local businesses, the city, and the county,” he said, noting that their input will be crucial in shaping the development plans. This approach aims to ensure that the changes being proposed are aligned with the aspirations and needs of the community.
Feedback from residents and business owners will be solicited in various ways, from surveys to public forums, to create an inclusive environment where everyone has a voice in the development process. Miller believes that this collaborative approach will foster greater trust and partnership between the foundation and the community.
Miller also outlined some specific goals for the foundation moving forward. Among them is fostering innovation and entrepreneurship within Oxford. This could include supporting local startups and encouraging more businesses to establish themselves within the area. By creating a robust support system for entrepreneurs, the foundation hopes to build a more diverse and resilient local economy.
Another area of focus will be on enhancing infrastructure. Given that transportation and access are critical to economic development, Miller emphasized that improving roads, public transport, and digital connectivity will be integral parts of their master plan.
As Miller settles into his role, his enthusiasm for the future is palpable. He believes that with a solid plan and strong community support, Oxford can look forward to a bright economic future. “We’re excited about the possibilities ahead,” he said, inviting everyone to join in the journey toward growth and prosperity.
With this proactive mindset and community-centric approach, the Oxford Lafayette Economic Development Foundation is poised to make significant strides in the development landscape, reinforcing its commitment to enhancing the lives of those who call Oxford home.
