Oxford Chargers Secure a Clean Sweep over Corinth
In an electrifying match-up on Friday, the Oxford Chargers decisively triumphed over Corinth, completing a sweep with a 6-0 shutout on the road.
Scoreless Start Sets the Stage
Fielding a solid roster, Oxford (19-9) kicked off the competition in an initial stalemate against Corinth. Through the first two innings, the scoreboard remained untainted with neither team breaking the no-score equilibrium. Offering a masterclass in precision, the Chargers’ starter, Brady Stinnett, allowed a double in the first while ushering in a quick 1-2-3 frame in the second inning.
A Third-Inning Breakthrough
Oxford’s offensive gears shifted in the third inning with early contributions from Jack Gaia and Sharpe Smith. Gaia swatted a double, followed seamlessly by a single from Smith, putting the Chargers in a promising position.
Finally flicking on the score-light, Reid Kent grounded out to shortstop, driving in the first run for the Chargers. Close behind, Sam Roy issued a riveting base hit to right field, delivering the second run for Oxford.
Oxford Unleashes Scoring Spree in Fifth
As the game progressed, Oxford’s dominance became increasingly apparent. Adding another compilation of runs to their tally, the Chargers catapulted their lead to a comfortable 6-0 in the fifth inning. Instrumental in the scoring spree were offensive powerhouses, Roy and Carson Schmelzer, who spurred the lead with subsequently successful base knocks.
Pitcher Stinnett wrapped up his contribution for the day with 5.0 innings in his pocket, allowing no scoring damage from Corinth, letting through only one hit and two walks, and dealing seven strikeouts.
Huggins and Upchurch Cement the Victory
Going on to continue Stinnett’s solid groundwork, Hayes Huggins relieved him in the sixth to face Corinth’s line-up. Huggins maintained the Chargers’ grip over the game by delivering an inning that saw no scoring concessions, just one hit and one walk, as well as accomplishing a strikeout.
Taking over the mound to finish off the seventh inning, Robert Upchurch completed Oxford’s shutout successfully with an unmarred performance, capping off the inning with a strikeout of his own.
