An Enlightening Interview with Oxford-based ANUBIS IMPROV’s David Hamilton

May 10, 2024, was a remarkable day for the local business community of Oxford as we had a riveting and insightful interview with David Hamilton, the founder of the popular improvisational comedy business, ANUBIS IMPROV. Contrary to popular belief, Hamilton reiterated through his personal story that improvisational comedy is not reserved for a select few, rather it’s for everyone.

Sparking an Interest in Improv Comedy

Around six months ago, curiosity piqued about this Oxford-based business, little did we know that it would lead to our involvement on a deeper level with ANUBIS IMPROV. Initially doubts like, “Improv comedy is not for me. I’m too busy; I’m not comfortable performing; I’m not clever enough” were lingering.

The turning point was the interesting and enjoyable hybrid show, Half and Half. More so, after attending the free Level 0 workshop, the hesitant mindset changed completely as we realized how invigorating it was to laugh heartily, engage in playful antics and unleash the creative side. The way this light-hearted activity decreased stress levels, the need to promote and participate in it further intensified.

The Inception of ANUBIS IMPROV

Hamilton’s journey with improv started in 2013 with classes in New Orleans. Initially a part of his career switching plan, the world of improv intrigued him and before he knew it, he was serving as a Conservatory director, teacher, coach, building manager, and much other stuff at the theater in New Orleans by 2014.

The unique style, the community built through active listening and respectful exchange of ideas, and more importantly the surge of joy and creativity experienced in the process are what made improv resonate with Hamilton. Not only does it provide comedic relief, participating in improv sessions also enhances listening skills, boosts confidence, and hones communication abilities, manifesting in personal and professional lives.

The Potential of Improv in the Business World

Hamilton is of the view that improv can be a valuable addition to sales teams’ arsenal as it improves active listening and response time. Additionally, it works wonders for executive education, including managing expectations and facilitating collaboration. Plus, ANUBIS IMPROV has already been a fun avenue for many businesses to encourage team building and foster stronger relationships among employees.

From a level 0 Workshop to a profound Improv Journey

The Level 0 workshop offered by ANUBIS IMPROV is a crucial traction point for newcomers into the world of improvisation. Scheduled for May 19 at The Powerhouse, this free workshop offers an introductory route into the world of improv, not requiring any previous improv or performance experience. Interestingly, it is planned so that participants can attend the student showcase show later that evening at the same venue to enjoy performances from students across different levels of their curriculum.

Anubis Improv – The Trail to the Future

ANUBIS IMPROV has ambitious plans for the future with the goal to have a dedicated classroom space and even a theatre of their own within a year. They aim to host regular shows to cultivate the improv community and look forward to more collaborations with local talents. Hamilton invites patrons of arts to invest in this creative venture and be part of their journey.

Hamilton sums it up perfectly – “Improv is literally for everyone. You don’t have to be anything. You have nothing to lose by doing a free workshop.”
