The City of Oxford hosted a Board of Aldermen Meeting Tuesday evening, July 2, 2024. The meeting was fielded via teleconference as part of the City’s initiative to maintain safety for its council members and citizens amid public health guidelines.
The meeting began with an official call to order and followed by the mayor’s report. Board members unanimous in adopting the agenda. Subsequently, attention was shifted to the approvals of the previous regular meeting minutes held on June 18, 2024, along with the accounts for all city departments.
Attention was then turned to the consent agenda which primarily deals with the operations of various city departments. It started with fixed assets management where requests were made for the disposal of surplus equipment in both the Oxford-University Transit Department and the Environmental Services Department. The Oxford Police Department also sought permission to include a list of weapons into its inventory in accordance with the MS Code Section.
In human resources, several departures, promotions, and hires were proposed. Recognizing the need for continuous development, several requests were made for several employees to participate in various training and workshops, most of which, remarkably, occur at no additional cost to the City.
All of these motions aim to strengthen the workforce of the City of Oxford by ensuring its employees are equipped with the relevant skills and competencies necessary to perform their duties and responsibilities at an optimum level.
Later, the board moved to address various miscellaneous issues, such as approval of water and sewer adjustments, authorization to accept donations for the Oxford Animal Resource Center, and the proposed demolition of a structure situated at 12 Gater Road.
Moreover, the floor was opened for the second reading and public hearing of a proposed ordinance amending the Land Development Code to establish a Housing Accelerator Overlay District. A similar procedure was undertaken for a proposed zoning map amendment for the said district. These measures are key to sustainable urban development within the city, ensuring that the city grows while considering urban planning standards and regulations.
The Board also dealt with various requests for permission to relocate the ice skating rink for the Holly Jolly Holidays and expand bus services for the Oxford-University Transit System. They also deliberated on the approval of a Parade/Assembly Permit for the Oxford Square Alliance to host the annual Sidewalk Sale to be held on July 12-13, 2024, from 9:00 am-5:30 pm.
The meeting concluded with a motion to recess and meet again on July 16, 2024. These discussions highlight the commitment of the city board in managing the city’s affairs with due diligence.
