In 2021, in response to the mounting challenges, the city established the Oxford Affordable Housing Commission. This group has been tasked with developing ordinances aimed at curbing rising housing costs by encouraging developers to construct lower-cost homes. Despite previous electoral setbacks, local advocate Duncan Gray has remained steadfast in his support for affordable housing initiatives and has been appointed to the commission as a research member.

A Step Towards Sustainability

Gray, who also works in Community and Workforce Development for the Oxford School District, has collaborated with the CREATE Foundation to launch the Oxford-Lafayette Housing Trust Fund. This new nonprofit endowment is designed with long-term sustainability in mind. It aims to support local housing initiatives through interest generated from the endowment itself, focusing on key areas such as home repairs, housing emergency relief, and down payment assistance for potential homeowners.

Instead of directly managing various programs, the fund will provide vital support to existing local organizations, allowing them to apply for grants once enough interest has been accumulated. Eligible organizations include well-known local entities such as Doors for Hope, Interfaith Compassion Ministries, the Fuller Center for Housing, and LOU-Homes.

Commitment from the City

To show their commitment, the city of Oxford has pledged $15,000 to kickstart the trust fund, including $5,000 earmarked for marketing efforts to promote awareness about this essential initiative. However, Gray has indicated that it may take a few years before grants can be awarded, calling for patience as the community works towards these significant goals.

In a bid to address housing shortages, the university has leased additional bed spaces, recognizing the urgent need for collaboration with city leaders to find sustainable solutions.

Many local residents, like a native woman who has been on the waiting list for Section 8 housing for two years, emphasize the long wait times and tedious processes tied to securing affordable housing. Meanwhile, the LOU-HOME Project seeks to address these needs further by proposing affordable housing developments aimed at residents earning below 60% of Oxford’s average income by 2034.
