Sponsor Our ArticlesOxford, Mississippi, was filled with the sounds of cheers and excitement on Saturday as the Ole Miss Rebels pulled off a crucial 26-14 victory against the Oklahoma Sooners at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. Despite struggling a bit in the first half and trailing at halftime, the Rebels showed resilience and determination, ultimately dominating the second half of the game.
The Rebels, now ranked No. 19 with a record of 6-2 (2-2 in the Southeastern Conference), found themselves in a bit of a pickle when they were down at the break. However, their head coach, Lane Kiffin, had faith in his squad, and rightly so. With a few adjustments, Ole Miss came roaring back, outscoring Oklahoma 16-0 in the final two quarters.
Coach Kiffin praised the efforts of quarterback Jaxson Dart, noting how he played exceptionally well, remaining particularly accurate with his throws. The absence of star receiver Tre Harris could have hampered the team, but Dart managed to spread the ball around effectively and keep the offense moving. Kiffin stated in a press conference, “I thought Jaxson played really well. Was really accurate with the ball… especially against a defense that has a great rusher.”
Indeed, while the Rebels have areas they need to improve upon, Kiffin was careful not to undermine the significance of their win over an SEC opponent. He emphasized that despite flaws in play, it’s important to acknowledge the achievement. “That’s a good win,” Kiffin remarked. “Don’t let people outside of this room steal your joy about winning in the SEC, especially by two scores and dominating the second half.”
Ole Miss’s defense also played a crucial role in the victory. After facing some challenges from the Sooners in the first half, the team made solid adjustments and effectively neutralized Oklahoma’s new play caller, Joe Jon Finley. Following the halftime break, the Rebels settled down and displayed what Kiffin described as “great, great defense.” Their ability to stifle the Sooners’ attempts in the second half clearly showcased their potential.
Kiffin highlighted that the whirlwind of changes from Oklahoma posed a significant challenge. Once his players adjusted to the different strategies that Oklahoma threw their way, they took control. It’s clear that there’s still work to be done but, for now, the focus remains on celebrating the victory.
With this win tucked under their belts, and a little boost in confidence, the Rebels will shift their attention to their upcoming game against the Arkansas Razorbacks. Traveling to Fayetteville has often proven to be a daunting task for Ole Miss, as history shows they have only clinched victory twice in the town. But the Rebels surely need to keep the momentum going if they want to re-enter the college football playoff conversation, especially with a big showdown against the Georgia Bulldogs looming on the horizon.
The Ole Miss vs. Arkansas matchup is set for this Saturday at 11 a.m. CT, and fans can catch the action live on ESPN. The excitement is palpable, and as the Rebels look to continue their upward trend, Oxford remains abuzz with anticipation. The road may be tough, but if this last game is anything to go by, the Rebels are ready to take on whatever challenges await them!
