Sponsor Our ArticlesAs 2024 begins, University of Mississippi students are setting ambitious New Year’s resolutions focused on academic success, personal growth, and well-being. From managing studies to enhancing social connections and improving health, students share their strategies for a balanced life this semester. With determination and optimism, they aim to make the most of their college experience in the new year.
As the calendar flips over to 2024, students at the University of Mississippi are bustling with excitement and motivation to kick off a new semester by setting bold New Year’s resolutions. Just like millions across the country, these students are focused not just on their studies but also on enriching their social lives and improving their overall well-being throughout the year.
Take Gillian Volz, for instance. A junior who is juggling a double major in risk management and insurance as well as real estate, she’s got her sights set on academic triumph while ensuring that she enjoys her college experience. Gillian plans to break down her coursework into manageable chunks—making it less daunting and more attainable. Plus, she’s determined to carve out time for self-care and hang out with friends, recognizing that maintaining a social life is essential for her mental health.
Sometimes, motivation can take a dip, and that’s where her secret weapon comes in: “brain breaks.” Whether it’s a refreshing stroll through her neighborhood or a fun visit to Lamar Park, these little pauses help her recharge and get back to tackling her studies.
Then there’s Maddie Boone, a fellow junior studying finance. Maddie has had her struggles when it comes to balancing her social calendar with her academic demands. In 2024, she’s resolved to find that elusive balance, ensuring she has enough time for both her studies and her social life. Another key part of her plan focuses on her health, specifically her diet. Maddie is aware that her eating habits, typical of a busy college lifestyle, are causing some nutritional deficiencies, and she’s committed to turning that around this year.
Not to be outdone, Rockwell Marcel, a senior majoring in geology, has a fabulous trio of resolutions lined up. His goals are all about finishing his final semesters on a high note, contributing meaningfully to his department, and perhaps even diving deep into the intriguing relationship between religion and geology. Rockwell’s aspirations reflect a blend of academic focus and personal growth that many students are hoping to accomplish this year.
Meanwhile, Grayson Easterling, a second-year law student, is taking a slightly different approach as he pursues his legal studies. His plans for 2024 include focusing on the principle that less is more, which could mean simplifying his life in various ways. Each day, he aims to meet someone new, broadening his social circle, and he’s determined to spend more time reading for enjoyment, which is always a great way to relax and unwind amidst a hectic school schedule.
Hagyn Paul, a senior studying geological engineering, is gearing up for an active year. She wants to commit to regular workout sessions, which will not only help in relieving academic stress but also provide a needed outlet for her energy. A big part of her resolution is to cut down on cellphone use, particularly by deleting social media apps like Instagram. By minimizing distractions, Hagyn hopes to fully engage in life and better focus on her studies.
Across the board, these students at the University of Mississippi resonate with a common theme in their resolutions—enhancing academic performance through effective strategies while ensuring they prioritize their social lives, physical health, and mental well-being. As they embark on this new year, the spirit of growth, balance, and intentional living takes center stage at Ole Miss.
With optimism, these eager students are ready to make the most of 2024, one resolution at a time!
