News Summary

Oxford’s Board of Aldermen has approved a utility request for The Julep, a new residential development aimed at enhancing the community. With 855 acres planned and 62.72 acres allocated for Phase 1, it promises increased housing options while raising concerns about environmental impacts. Enhanced water and sewer services will form part of the new infrastructure, including two sewer pumping stations. Residents look forward to about 1,900 homes in the next decade, contingent on final state approvals to ensure health and safety standards are met.

Exciting Times Ahead for Oxford with The Julep Residential Development!

In a move that has many residents buzzing with anticipation, Oxford’s Board of Aldermen has given the green light to a utility request for what promises to be a fantastic new addition to our community—The Julep, Phase 1! Situated close to Old Taylor Road, this expansive residential development has already started to show its potential to enhance our beloved city.

What’s Happening?

The request was submitted by Southern Land Holdings and came with a glowing endorsement from the Oxford Planning Commission. This approval marks a step forward in what is envisioned to become a lively neighborhood. The development is planned to cover a whopping 855 acres, flowing gracefully from Old Taylor Road all the way to Pea Ridge Road, and Phase 1 will take up an area of around 62.72 acres.

Why It Matters to Residents

Now, here comes the interesting part—the project is conveniently located just outside Oxford’s corporate boundaries, yet it’s situated within a mile of the city’s southern edge. This is music to the ears of locals who are eager for more housing options without venturing too far away from the city’s heart. However, it also raises a few eyebrows, especially around concerns regarding environmental impacts.

A Nod to Sustainability

The city’s engineering department is currently revisiting the stormwater retention plan for The Julep to ensure that it integrates smoothly with our existing systems. During earlier discussions, resident Janice Antonow raised some valid concerns about stormwater management and erosion control. Suffice to say, it’s paramount for residents to feel confident that their environment will be safeguarded while new development takes place.

Infrastructure Development

The utility request, which was considered during the Board of Aldermen’s regular meeting at City Hall, includes enhanced water and sewer services. These services are set to adhere to Oxford’s site plan regulations and will introduce new infrastructure to the area, including the construction of two sewer pumping stations that the city will maintain. Isn’t that something? Not only will it support the new homes, but it will also benefit the community at large.

What’s Next?

Before the project can move forward, it will still need final approvals from the Mississippi Department of Health and the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality. Ensuring that everything aligns with health and safety standards remains a top priority for the homebuilders, the city, and, most importantly, the residents.

Roads and Accessibility

All the roads within The Julep are set to be constructed to city standards, with responsibilities for ownership and maintenance falling under Lafayette County. This means the residents will enjoy access to quality roads, which is always a huge plus! Additionally, the anticipated water demand for The Julep is expected to be about a quarter of what Oxford currently uses daily, which sounds quite manageable.

Looking to the Future

As we gaze forward, the vision for The Julep aims to ultimately yield about 1,900 homes over the next 10 to 15 years. Imagine the vibrant community that will flourish in the coming years! And don’t forget that a new 16″ water main will be constructed from Belk Boulevard to the site—all funded by the developer. The sewer service will be efficiently provided via a gravity trunk line connecting to existing city sewer mains.

Final Thoughts

While residents have expressed a strong desire for more housing, they are right to want positive assurances regarding environmental controls. With the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality currently investigating potential contamination in nearby waters, it’s critical that we keep our environment safe and sound as growth unfolds. The Julep, with its thoughtful planning and robust infrastructure, certainly has the potential to be an exciting chapter for Oxford. Here’s to a bright, community-centered future!
