In a vibrant celebration in the heart of Oxford, the University of Mississippi recently held a community dinner and service day to honor the remarkable life and contributions of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. The event kicked off on January 17 in the Student Union Ballroom, where community members gathered to celebrate unity and recognize the importance of King’s legacy.
The festivities began with a community-wide dinner, pulled together by the university’s Center for Community Engagement. This gathering was a real testament to community spirit and a shared mission of service—a perfect way to remember a figure who believed so deeply in the power of collective action.
Promoting inclusivity and inspiration, the event showcased several captivating speakers who shared their insights on King’s enduring impact. Among them were Vice Chancellor Shawnboda Mead, junior Devlyn Williams, and retired professor Iman Gohar, each contributing their unique perspective on what King’s legacy means today. The highlight of the evening came from poet Gloria J. McEwen Burgess, who served as the keynote speaker.
McEwen Burgess shared her thoughts on legacy leadership and the notion of a beloved community, the idea that individuals can come together to create a nurturing, accepting environment that uplifts everyone. Adding a personal touch, she recounted her father’s dream to pursue higher education and how this dream was supported by none other than the acclaimed author William Faulkner.
This touching story served as a reminder of the importance of helping one another achieve their dreams. Attendees were encouraged to practice small, daily acts of empathy and love, paving the way for a brighter future. With a strong belief in the power of the younger generation, McEwen Burgess emphasized how they possess the tools and vision to drive meaningful change.
Iman Gohar also had the audience in rapt attention with his interfaith invocation. He deftly tied Islamic principles such as respect, dignity, and kindness to King’s lifelong struggle for justice, reinforcing the idea that different faiths can converge on the common goal of uplifting humanity.
After an inspiring evening, volunteers took to heart the call for community action during the MLK Day of Service on January 20. With an army of around 180 volunteers ready and willing, the day was packed with a variety of uplifting activities. From building raised garden beds to care for rescued animals and organizing the UM Career Center closet, participants rolled up their sleeves and dove into projects aimed at enriching the community. They even crafted teething bracelets for new mothers and wrote heartfelt letters of appreciation.
Verna Stokes, a passionate volunteer at the event, expressed her fervent hope for personal improvement as well as growth within her community. She felt rejuvenated by the positive energy of the gatherings, a sentiment echoed by Sarah Baker, a recent university graduate who championed the idea that legacies can indeed be formed in one’s lifetime, rather than being relegated to historical archives.
Castel Sweet, who directs Community Engagement, highlighted the critical aspect of community unity and the importance of service, reminding attendees that while MLK Day is a day of remembrance, the spirit of community engagement should continue throughout the year. Such annual events serve as a launchpad, igniting an ongoing commitment to bettering the community.
As the echoes of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s values resonate in Oxford, these recent events have kindled a flame of hope and unity within the hearts of many, proving that anyone can be a catalyst for change in their community.
