University of Mississippi Welcomes Freshmen with Insights on Happiness

Oxford, Mississippi – On Tuesday, August 27, 2024, the University of Mississippi hosted its annual Fall Convocation at the Sandy and John Black Pavilion, where students, faculty, staff, and administration gathered to mark the beginning of the academic year. This year’s keynote speaker was Arthur Brooks, a renowned author and social scientist, who spoke on the topic of happiness and well-being.

Sharing the Secrets of Happiness

Brooks is the author of the popular book “Build the Life You Want: The Art and Science of Getting Happier,” which is this year’s selected reading for incoming first-year students as part of the university’s common reading initiative. This tradition allows students to engage with a shared text to foster discussion and a sense of community.

During his speech, Brooks emphasized that happiness is more than just a fleeting emotion. He described it as a tangible outcome that can be cultivated through intentional actions and choices. “You want to add people and memories to the things you like. That’s the point here in college, to do things together with your new friends and the people that you love,” he stated, encouraging students to build meaningful connections.

Finding Personal Definitions of Happiness

Brooks urged the audience to reflect on their purpose by asking core questions like, “Why are you alive?” and “For what would you give your life?” He reminded students that college is a unique time to explore these deeper queries about life and happiness.

He concluded his talk with a call to action, motivating students to spread the ideas discussed during the event. “The more you share the ideas, the more that these concepts will be permanently launched in your brain and written on your heart,” he remarked, highlighting the reciprocal nature of helping others find happiness while reinforcing one’s own understanding.

Additional Highlights from the Ceremony

Alongside Brooks’ presentation, Lou Burney, a notable recipient of the St. Amand Outstanding Award, gave an address highlighting student achievements. The event also included the presentation of new commemorative coins to students, celebrating their journey at the university.

The ceremony concluded with the University Creed recited by the Associated Student Body President, Hannah Watts, followed by the singing of the Alma Mater, led by members of the University of Mississippi Chorus.

Students’ Responses

Freshman biology student Izzy Goddard expressed her enthusiasm for the event, stating, “It was really motivating. I feel like it was a good start to the year.” Another freshman, Katie Norris, echoed similar thoughts, saying, “I thought it was a really good start to the year, and it just gave me a new perspective on going to college and how to get about things.”

Looking Ahead

The Fall Convocation set a positive tone for the new academic year at the University of Mississippi. With insights from Brooks, students are poised to explore paths of happiness while navigating their college experiences, making memories, and building relationships that will last a lifetime.
