OXFORD, Miss. – In a thrilling display of skill and determination, the No. 3 Mississippi State Bulldogs continued their remarkable season by claiming their fifth consecutive Magnolia Cup with a solid 2-0 victory over their in-state rivals, the Ole Miss Rebels, on Friday night.
This victory marks a multitude of achievements for the Bulldogs. With a current record of 13 wins and just 1 loss this season, the Bulldogs’ seventh straight win in SEC play showcases their dominance, making it a perfect 7-0-0 in the Southeastern Conference — a first in the program’s history. This match also extended their impressive winning streak to ten games and tied the program record for the most wins in a single season. Additionally, they celebrated their twelfth shutout of the year, firmly proving their defensive capabilities.
Right from the kickoff, Mississippi State made their intentions clear. Sophomore forward Zoe Main stunned the crowd by scoring just over a minute into the match! With an assist from midfielder Ally Perry, Main’s quick finish set the tone early on. This speedy goal not only thrilled the Bulldog fans but also earned the title of the fastest goal scored in Magnolia Cup history for either team.
Despite the Rebels’ efforts to fight back, they found it tough to break through Mississippi State’s rock-solid defense. Senior goalkeeper Maddy Anderson showcased her incredible skills once again, delivering four crucial saves throughout the match. Her performance solidified her position as a national leader in goals-against average, marking her 11th clean sheet of the season. The teamwork and discipline exhibited by the Bulldogs’ backline played a pivotal role in limiting Ole Miss’s offensive chances, keeping them scoreless.
The intensity of the rivalry was palpable, especially in the second half when emotions ran high, leading to four yellow cards being issued during the game. Yet, the Bulldogs maintained their cool amidst the pressure. With just three minutes left on the clock, Main struck again, netting her second goal of the night, thanks to a beautiful setup from Aitana Martinez-Montoya. This late goal not only sealed the win but also celebrated Main’s impressive performance and the Bulldogs’ dominant hold on the Magnolia Cup.
Despite the loss, Ole Miss’s goalkeeper Shu Ohba had a noteworthy night, making an admirable eight saves. Despite these efforts, the Rebels struggled to find their footing in SEC play, remaining winless at 0-7-1 in their conference matches.
Looking ahead, the Bulldogs will return home for their final regular season game in 2024. They will host Kentucky at the MSU Soccer Field, with kickoff scheduled for 6:30 p.m. It’s an exciting time for the Bulldogs as they continue to push for more records and accolades in this outstanding season.
