The Mississippi Department of Health completed a series of inspections between May 1 and May 31 at 48 food service venues across Lafayette County. Remarkably, 42 establishments received top ‘A’ grades for their high standards in food hygiene and safety.
Every food facility is obligated to showcase their inspection results via a straightforward letter grading system, helping to convey their most recent Health Department analysis clearly. Be it a restaurant, school cafeteria, day care center, or any establishment where food is dispensed, this grading method applies uniformly.
Grade ‘A’ symbolizes that no grave violations were detected during the inspection. The ‘B’ grade, however, is assigned when critical violations were found but promptly amended under the guidance of the overseeing environmentalist. In such cases, no further rectification is mandated.
Grade ‘C’ declares that critical violations were detected, and some or all of them might not have been corrected during the audit. Such facilities will be re-inspected with all violations needing to be rectified within a maximum of 10 days.
The facilities obtaining ‘A’ grades in the most recent inspections include prominent names such as Papa John’s, City Grocery, Handy Andy Deli, The Bling Pig restaurant and bar, YaYa’s Yogurt, and Rooster’s Blues House amongst others.
Other notable establishments bagging ‘A’ grades were McAlister’s Deli, Dunkin Donuts, Moe’s Original BBQ, Costa Mexican Grill at Oxford, and The Grille at Ole Miss Golf Course. Furthermore, various mobile units like Just Chillin Snow Cones and Fresh Out of the Water also achieved high standards proving hygiene and best practices are not limited to traditional brick-and-mortar establishments.
Meanwhile, the establishments that scored ‘B’ grades during their recent inspections include Starbucks housed in the UM J.D. Williams Library, Aloha Thai-Hawaiian Restaurant, The Kitchen of St. Martha DBA Tarasque, and McDonald’s of Oxford, to name a few.
A single establishment, Wild Wild Wings & More, fell into the ‘C’ grade bracket, reflecting the need for critical improvement in hygiene standards. As per the grading system, they will be reaudited, and every violation must be fixed within a maximum of 10 days.
The recent inspections and the resulting grades serve as an indicator for Lafayette County’s commitment towards maintaining the highest level of importance on food hygiene and safety. It also acts as an effective tool for consumers to make informed decisions about the food establishments they frequent. Continued transparency in such matters will surely contribute more to public health and safety.
