Oxford’s Lyric Theater Flourishes During its Second Act

The historic Lyric Theater in Oxford, Mississippi, a space that has hosted revered artists from the likes of William Faulkner to Willie Nelson, continues to thrive during its second act. Despite challenges imposed by the pandemic, the venue reopened its doors to a sold-out audience in September 2021, symbolizing the resilient spirit of the arts community.

A Homecoming Concert Amidst The Pandemic

On a cold September evening, swarms of locals, college students, and guests that spanned as far as California flocked to the Oxford Square. They sauntered past esteemed institutions like Square Books and City Grocery, and perhaps a few tourists even took a selfie with the bronzed statue of William Faulkner situated outside City Hall.

The influx of patrons was not for a football match, but rather, they were there to experience live music at the Lyric Theater on Van Buren Avenue. Attendees eagerly walked past COVID-sniffing dogs and filled the theater where the Black Keys, renowned Mississippi Blues enthusiasts, thrilled audiences with their high-spirited performance.

Lindsay Dillon-Maginnis, co-owner and general manager of the Lyric, remarks that the energy and excitement that evening were unparalleled, and it was among her favorite nights at the theater.

The Revival of the Lyric Theater

The rebirth of the theater, however, had been a long-term effort. The structure, originally erected as a livery stable in the late 1800s, was converted into a performance theater and silent movie hub in the 1920s. When Bradley Bishop acquired the building in 2007, the goal was to reclaim the space for a single-use facility to facilitate concerts in the growing college town.

Since reopening in 2008, the Lyric has been a favorite spot for performances by artists from various genres. The theater has hosted country stars like Eric Church and Willie Nelson, indie rock bands like Big Thief and The Mountain Goats, and hip-hop artists such as T-Pain and Lil Uzi Vert.

More Than Just A Concert Venue

When not hosting concerts, the Lyric Theater is a highly sought-after location for hosting private events like wedding receptions, fundraisers, and corporate gatherings. With its reputation as a full-service space that includes multiple bars, green rooms, and a storied history, the theater has become an iconic site for numerous events.

Dillon-Maginnis believes that the theater is constantly evolving and will continue to do so. She expresses a desire for the venue to be a place of community gathering, offering an enriching experience for anyone that walks through its doors.
