Lafayette County Courthouse Renovation Proceeds Ahead of Schedule
Renovations of the historical Lafayette County Courthouse in Oxford are nearing completion, ahead of the scheduled timeline.
Lafayette County Courthouse: A Monumental Project nears Completion
The courthouse, built in 1872 after the original structure was lost to a fire during the Civil War, holds a significant place in the community and the state. The renovation of this valuable asset was approved last summer by the Lafayette County Board of Supervisors, approximately 15 years after its previous refurbishing.
“This is a monumental project for us at Lafayette. We have strived to retain the original character of the building while enhancing it for modern functionalities,” explained the project manager.
What’s New for the Courthouse?
Refurbishments include updates to the courthouse’s traditional infrastructure. The interiors have been subjected to several modifications, beginning with the updating of the courtroom facilities, the improvement of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, and installation of new energy-efficient windows to replace the old ones. Space has also been reconfigured to provide better accessibility and improved office spaces.
Work on the courthouse includes an exterior face-lift to preserve its distinctive historical character.
The contractors have been busy repointing the beautiful red-brick façade, renovating the original windows, and fixing the roof.
Progressing at Pace
Progress of the refurbishing work has been swift and uninterrupted, and the entire project is now poised to conclude ahead of schedule. Considering the complexities of refurbishing a 150-year old structure, this indeed is an achievement.
“We are ahead of our projected schedule and are excited to reveal an updated Courthouse that merges the historic essence with improved functionality,” said the project manager.

Nestled in the heart of Oxford downtown on the Square, the Lafayette County Courthouse has a rich history and heritage. It has served as the epicenter of the county affairs and continues to be in active use. The courthouse has also been a prominent locale in several popular literary works, including those by the celebrated author William Faulkner.
The renovations ensure that the courthouse can continue to serve the community while preserving its historical integrity.
