OXFORD, Miss. – A proud native of Oxford, Mississippi, has been honored as the recipient of the prestigious 2024 Chucky Mullins Courage Award for the Ole Miss football team. The announcement was made on Thursday by head football coach Lane Kiffin, who revealed that senior defensive tackle JJ Pegues will wear the number 38 during the upcoming season.
This marks the 34th time the award has been given out in its 35-year history. The Chucky Mullins Courage Award honors the legacy of Chucky Mullins, a beloved figure in Ole Miss football. His career was tragically cut short in 1989 when he suffered a life-changing injury during a Homecoming game against Vanderbilt. Mullins, who later returned to school to continue his education, passed away on May 6, 1991.
During the announcement, Pegues expressed his deep appreciation for being chosen for the award. “It’s a blessing,” he said. “Growing up here, being five and six years old and hearing about the award, my family always spoke highly of the award. I knew once I got back and learned more about it, I just really wanted to be that guy to represent him and his legacy.”
Pegues plans to wear Mullins’ iconic No. 38 jersey during home games and will modify his original No. 89 jersey with a 38 patch for away games. “At the end of the day, you never know when it might be your last football play,” he continued. “For me, just the guy I am, just trying to give back to the younger generation and just try to be the light of Ole Miss. That’s the main reason I really wanted this award, and I appreciate it.”
JJ Pegues is coming off an impressive season where he recorded career highs in various categories. In the 2023 season, he tallied a total of 42 tackles, 8 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, and 4 pass breakups. He also managed to add two QB hurries to his performance. Pegues is expected to be a crucial player for the Ole Miss defensive line, which is being touted as one of the most talented fronts in the program’s history.
The excitement is building for Ole Miss fans as the Rebels prepare for their season opener. They are set to host Furman this Saturday at 6 p.m..
The recognition of Pegues is not only significant for him personally but also for the Oxford community, who take great pride in their hometown hero. As Pegues embraces this award, he hopes to inspire younger players to value their journey and understand the importance of courage, hard work, and perseverance in their own lives.
As the season unfolds, all eyes will be on Pegues as he steps into the spotlight, showcasing not just his talent on the field but also honoring the legacy of Chucky Mullins. This award is a testament to his character and commitment to following in the footsteps of a great who once played for Ole Miss.
With a meaningful season ahead, Pegues is ready to step up and lead the Rebels as they pursue greatness this fall. After the announcement, many fans echo the sentiment that it is time to rally behind Pegues and the entire Ole Miss team as they look to make this season one to remember.
