Fourth of July Trash Pickup, Closings, and More

With the Fourth of July holiday landing on a Thursday, local government offices around Oxford and Lafayette County are closing their doors for a long weekend, and trash collection will see notable changes. Both the city limits of Oxford and Lafayette County will be disrupted, with no garbage, recycling, or rubbish pickup planned for Thursday or Friday.

Trash Collection Schedule

Oxford residents who normally have trash picked up on Thursday and Friday should prepare to have their trash on the curb by 6 a.m. on Wednesday, July 3. This arrangement will serve as a catch-all for the two days the service will be discontinued.

Similarly, the households of Lafayette County originally scheduled for Thursday routes will also be collected a day early, on July 3. However, those with a usual Friday pick up will need to wait until the following Friday, July 12, due to landfill closures happening on Fourth of July and the day after.

Office Closures and Transit Changes

All local city and county offices will be closed on both Thursday and Friday in observance of the holiday. This includes most state and federal courts and offices, as well as the U.S. Post Office and banks. However, each individual branch and office may vary, so please check with them directly to confirm their schedule.

Notably, the Oxford-University Transit buses will not be in operation on Fourth of July. For those opting for a city stroll or seeking to enjoy the downtown Square, parking will be free on this day, including in the city’s parking garage.

Public Library Closure

Bookworms and knowledge seekers will need to adjust their schedules, as the Oxford-Lafayette County Public Library will also not be open on Thursday and Friday.

Fourth of July Special Events

Despite these changes in standard operations, the city will not be without the traditional Fourth of July events. There is a parade and fireworks display planned to mark the day. We encourage every resident to come down and participate in the festivities.
