Students Gather in Oxford for Fall Convocation
Oxford, Mississippi – On August 27, 2024, students, faculty, and staff from the University of Mississippi came together at the Sandy and John Black Pavilion for the annual Fall Convocation. The highlight of the event was a keynote speech by Arthur Brooks, an influential author known for his work on happiness and well-being. His book, Build the Life You Want: The Art and Science of Getting Happier, was chosen as the common reading for incoming first-year students this year.
Insights on Happiness
Brooks captivated the audience with his insights on achieving happiness during the college years and throughout life. Observing that many people view happiness merely as a fleeting feeling, he emphasized that it is actually tangible and can be cultivated through deliberate actions. “You want to add people and memories to the things you like. That’s the point here in college, to do things together with your new friends and the people that you love,” said Brooks, encouraging students to build meaningful connections.
Finding Individual Happiness
During his speech, Brooks prompted students to reflect deeper on their own definitions of happiness. He urged them to ask themselves crucial questions, such as “Why are you alive?” and “For what would you give your life?” He reminded attendees that college is an ideal time to explore these questions, fostering personal growth and self-discovery.
Sharing and Growth
In conclusion, Brooks urged the students to share their understanding of happiness with others, explaining that sharing ideas strengthens their own grasp of those concepts. “The more you share the ideas, the more that these ideas will be permanently launched in your brain and written on your heart,” he said. He emphasized the mutual benefit of helping others find happiness, suggesting that doing good for others ultimately brings personal fulfillment.
Acknowledgments and Ceremonies
The Fall Convocation also featured an address from Lou Burney, who received the St. Amand Outstanding Award. Additionally, students were presented with new commemorative coins during the ceremony, marking the beginning of their academic journey. The event concluded with the reading of the University Creed by the Associated Student Body President, Hannah Watts, followed by a performance of the Alma Mater led by the University of Mississippi Chorus.
Student Reactions
Many students took away positive messages from Brooks’ speech. Freshman biology major Izzy Goddard expressed her thoughts, stating, “It was really motivating. I feel like it was a good start to the year.” Another student, Katie Norris, shared similar feelings, noting how the speech provided her with a fresh perspective on college life. “It gave me a new perspective on going to college and how to get about things,” she commented. “And it was really great hearing from the author and about his book.”
Looking Ahead
This year’s Fall Convocation was not only a traditional kickoff for the academic year but also an insightful event aimed at enhancing the students’ college experience through the exploration of happiness. With Brooks’ valuable advice and encouragement, students are set to embark on a meaningful journey ahead.
