Oxford, Mississippi – On August 27, 2024, the University of Mississippi welcomed students, faculty, and staff for the annual Fall Convocation in the Sandy and John Black Pavilion. This year’s keynote speaker was Arthur Brooks, an influential author and social scientist, known for his book, “Build the Life You Want: The Art and Science of Getting Happier.” The event aimed to inspire and guide the class of 2028 as they embark on their new college journey.
Broadening the scope of knowledge and experience, the University of Mississippi has a long-standing tradition where first-year students read a selected book prior to the start of their college year. Brooks’ book was chosen as the common reading, encouraging students to engage with its messages together.
During his speech, Brooks emphasized that happiness is more than just a fleeting feeling; it’s something tangible that can be cultivated. He discussed techniques to increase personal happiness, saying, “You want to add people and memories to the things you like. That’s the point here in college, to do things together with your new friends and the people that you love.”
Brooks urged attendees to personally reflect on their definitions of happiness, posing questions like, “Why are you alive?” and “For what would you give your life?” He encouraged students to utilize their time on campus to discover and answer these important questions.
In wrapping up his address, Brooks stressed the value of sharing ideas, stating, “The more you share the ideas, the more that these ideas will be permanently launched in your brain and written on your heart.” He suggested that helping others find happiness is beneficial not only to them but also enriches one’s own life.
The convocation also featured an address from Lou Burney, the recipient of the St. Amand Outstanding Award, who shared his insights on the significance of academic achievement. Additionally, the ceremony included the distribution of commemorative coins to students, recognizing their commitment to their education.
To conclude the event, Associated Student Body President Hannah Watts led the audience in the reading of the University Creed, followed by a performance of the Alma Mater by members of the University of Mississippi Chorus.
Freshman biology major Izzy Goddard found the event to be motivational. She stated, “I feel like it was a good start to the year.” Her fellow classmate, Katie Norris, echoed similar feelings, adding, “It just gave me a new perspective on going to college and how to get about things.” The motivational impressions left by Brooks resonate with many students as they embark on their unique journeys at university.
As the new academic year unfolds, students at the University of Mississippi look forward to not just academic success, but also enriching their lives through connections, memories, and the pursuit of happiness. The reflections and engagement prompted by Arthur Brooks at the Fall Convocation serve as a reminder that happiness is not merely a goal; it’s an ongoing journey, one that is best enjoyed together.
