Errol Robinson, a former standout shortstop at Ole Miss, is returning to professional baseball after leaving his role as a student assistant coach. Signing with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, Robinson looks to revive his career while inspiring future players with his journey. Known for his impressive collegiate stats and contributions to the team, Robinson remains connected to his roots in academia, reflecting on the support he received throughout his career. With new opportunities ahead, he is poised not only to play but also to mentor young athletes.

Exciting Transition for Former Ole Miss Star Errol Robinson

Oxford, Mississippi – The baseball world is buzzing with the news that Errol Robinson, a standout shortstop from the University of Mississippi, is leaving his role as a student assistant coach to chase his dream of playing professional baseball once again. Robinson has inked a contract with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, an independent team within the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, making a triumphant return to his home state of Maryland.

From Turf to Dugout

Robinson made his mark at Ole Miss from 2014 to 2016. He was celebrated for being the first true freshman to earn the starting shortstop position since Zack Cozart, a legendary figure in Ole Miss history. His impressive career included a prestigious selection as a preseason All-America by D1Baseball.com during his final year, where his stats reflected his skill: a batting average of .270 with 69 hits, 45 runs, and 36 RBIs.

Robinson also showcased his defensive prowess, helping the Rebels turn an impressive 31 double plays, leading the Southeastern Conference (SEC) in that category. Under his influence, the team managed to reach the SEC Tournament semifinals and even hosted a Regional in Oxford during 2016.

Taking the Next Step

Errol’s journey in baseball took a significant turn when he was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the sixth round of the 2016 MLB Draft. He worked diligently in the Dodgers organization, climbing to AAA before also playing for the Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals. Most recently, he signed with the Baltimore Orioles but was released in July 2024. Now, with a fresh contract under his belt, he’s ready to add a new chapter to his illustrious career.

Returning Home

Stepping away from coaching, where he acted as an adviser to the infielders during the fall of 2024, was a tough decision for Robinson. Nonetheless, returning to Maryland to join the Blue Crabs offers an exciting opportunity to play the game he loves. Being back in his home state not only gives him a chance to revive his professional aspirations but also allows him to share this journey with his family. Just recently married and a proud father, Robinson emphasizes the importance of family support in pursuing his goals.

Staying Connected

Despite transitioning from the coaching role, Robinson showcased his loyalty to Ole Miss by attending their 2025 home opener against Arkansas State as a supporter. His former coach, Mike Bianco, acknowledged the significant role student assistants like Robinson play in connecting with current team members. Robinson used his platform to share valuable insights from his professional journey, hoping to inspire the next generation of ballplayers at Ole Miss.

A Legacy of Impact

Robinson reflected on his time at Ole Miss with nostalgia, recalling the challenges he faced as a Black man in a sport often colored by a lack of diversity, particularly in the Southern U.S. Yet, he noted the unwavering support from the Ole Miss fanbase throughout his career, which helped him persevere. Additionally, his accolades include being an All-SEC Freshman and playing a pivotal role in leading the Rebels to their first College World Series appearance in 42 years.

As Ole Miss kicks off the 2025 season ranked No. 24 and with a promising 7-1 record, fans will undoubtedly remember the contributions of Errol Robinson as both a player and a mentor. Even as he embarks on this new adventure with the Blue Crabs, his legacy at Ole Miss is sure to resonate with players and fans alike.

The future looks bright for Robinson, who sees coaching in his future post-playing career. His student assistant experience has provided him with a foundation that will certainly benefit him in his continued journey in the world of baseball.
